Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a
horrible crisp no one would eat?

good question...the world may never know

my husband says it's because the toaster company is in cahoots with the bread companies so that you have to use a whole bunch of bread and then buy more because inevitably someone bumps or screws with your toaster setting...lol

I think the number settings on the toaster are actually minutes. Some people like burned toast...then they scrape it off with a knife before eating it.

It is not the toaster, but the water content in the bread!
If your bread is very dry, put it on the lowest setting!
Clean up those crumbs now!
