I have heard this on many occasions and have always wondered where it originated from?

"A dime a dozen" literally means "Of little value" If you can purchase 12 items for such a small amount, that means it's cheap or nearly worthless.

A dime a dozen originated with baked goods.

Eggs are common and at one point (believe it or not) were a dime a dozen. Very inexpensive and easy to come by.

This phrase is often applied not to just women, but other things as well when the importance of a good one needs to be diminutized.

Wooohoooo - 2 points for "diminutized"!!
