The onion portion that most of us eat is a vegetable bulb. The difference in the fruit and the vegetable has to do with the reproductive portions of the plant. Tomatoes are fruits as their seeds are produced in an ovary whereas vegetablels are produced with external seeds (corn niblets on a cob, for example.)
Apples, while normally called fruits are pomes. Cherries are drupes, etc.

I am pretty sure it would be considered a vegetable. Fruit usually contain seeds which is why a tomatoe is considered a fruit.
