Crate your dog while you're gone.

I read all the answers given so far, so I realize that I'm not telling you anything you haven't heard, as in all the good reasons to crate your dog, however, there's one that hasn't been mentioned yet: it's highly important that you use the right size crate for your dog, which is one where your dog can stand up and turn around in it only, otherwise the dog will start to sleep/lay down at one end, and go potty at the other end. Never let the dog in it for long periods of time, smaller the dog, less the time in it; never put food or water in it; toys, safe chews are the best; try to get it to go potty before putting it into a crate, and take it to potty first thing when it gets out of the crate.

You dog needs to be put in a kennel when you are gone, If he/she can't stop getting into mischiefs when you leave the house a kennel is definitely the best idea....

The cage doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing, unless you treat it like a punishment. When ever you put him/her in there all you have to do is tell them Good Girl/Boy and give them a treat. Make sure the kennel is big enough so they he/she can sleep comfortably when you are away. (Trust me my dog LOVES her kennel! It has become her little home!!!!)

Dog-proof your home and train the dog to poop in certain area. Make the dog comfortable before dashing out. Train the dog by leaving for a few minutes, at first. Gradually lengthen the time gone. Don't upset dog by leaving it alone too long or too often.

My husband said to take the dog with you. The dog wants to go out too.

If you're only gone a few hours, you can put him in a dog carrier. He might learn not to mess things up if you do it regularly.
