I have recently been through a really tough time in my life, (still not quite through it). I started back to church, pray and always ask God for guidance, love and strengh. My problem is that I don't feel like God is with me. I don't know what else to do. I have no one to talk to. Any suggestions?

There is no doubt that you could convince your self that there is a God, and that he is listening to your prays and that he loves you
You are not the only one on earth that has been through a rough patch.
I am atheist nothing at all will ever change that, I cant ever blame God, I 'know' there is no God I cant prove it of course, the same as these religious folk cant prove there is!
Your main problem seems to be that you have no one to talk to? and thats the main thing you need right now , I dont know enough about you to offer any real advice other than do not turn yourself into a complete religious freak, get onto some chat rooms, talk to people on line from other countries, get your finger out, if you were a friend of mine I would be very tempted to give you a swift kick in the butt!! Plan a good holiday save up for it and go for it, try Thailand, let your hair down, how old are you? you sound as if your around 80.
Forget all this religious stuff it will drive you potty. Life is for the living, live it!!!!

Have you studied the christian bible in depth? If you regard the bible as a biography of the character of god, what conclusions can you make about him? He is in the first place vain - he demands that you worship him. He is extremely jealous - he wants to kill you if you love another god. He changes his mind very often, regrets things he did and throws irrational temper tantrums. Does this really sound like the characteristics of the god/force that created the ENTIRE universe?? It sounds pretty human to me. According to the ancient astronaut hypothesis, an advanced alien race have visited earth in ancient times and created humans by combining their genes with the genes of a local ape-species to create a slave species. Have you noticed that your role towards god in the bible is that of an obedient servant? They said they created us in their image. Note the use of the plural in Genesis. I have no theories about the origin of the universe or a possible "god" that created it. I think the question of the origin of the human race lies within the realm of human understanding.

I suggest resolving to make your own life better, instead of waiting for someone or something else to make things better. I tried praying during a time I was depressed, but I got out of my depression after I stopped praying and started believing in my own ability to solve problems. You can start to improve your life by finding a friend you can talk with, for example. Don't ask yourself if you're happy; thinking about whether we are happy usually makes us feel less happy. You'll actually be happier if you immerse yourself in activities you enjoy (as long as they don't harm your health), and try not to dwell on problems, except when figuring out solutions. Exercise, a healthy diet, and a proper amount of sleep are highly important for psychological well-being. Also, just smiling can make you feel better. :)

The Summons

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Will you love the “you” you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

Lord your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In Your company I’ll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

get the tune to this song and listen to it everyday. If you can't find that, just pray the lyrics everyday.

Loaded question... no one "knows" that God exists, because they cannot, despite all the thumbs-downs I will receive, prove that he does. At all.

If you have no one to talk to, there's your first problem. The first thing you need to establish is a support network. Friends, family, your priest, etc. Anyone you feel you can trust.

God is the one putting you through this tough time in the first place, right? He's the one controlling everything. If he's not answering you, it's probably because he's hiding something.

Maybe you could take to a priest, minister, or spiritual director. They can help you pray and to develop a relationship with God. Like all relationships, it takes time to develop, so you have to be willing to be patient.
Good luck and God Bless!

Edit: To im_a_catholic, I LOVE that song!

It's all about faith. You choose to have faith. That is trust and obedience. That trust is blind at first and always unconditional. Regardless of whether you are facing adversities or blessings in your life, your faith in Jesus as your Lord is paramount. Through this, He gives you peace. He may or may not remove your situation. You may or may not feel happy or experience some spiritual thing. Faith in Christ is not about feelings. It is about hope, love, and peace. The more you trust, the more you begin to see how God is in control of your life. When you are seeking and doing HIs will for you, you will be very pleased and at peace. The miracles you begin to see in your life encourage you for more faith. Ultimately, you can say soomething like Paul said near to his death...to live is Christ and to die is gain (paraphrase). When you yield your life to God and His direction, prepare to see amazing things happen...whether adversity of blessing, you can sincerely praise God.
Remember faith is not about feelings. Faith is not dependent on what God does or does not do for you. Faith is about submitting your life unconditionally to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour.

You have an open-line to God ....its called prayer.
He listens to all those that approach him seriously, sincerely and openly.
If, in association with the group you are presently with, you do not feel you are getting close to God ....change groups.
Keep changing till it works.
Does God exist?
Yes.
If you and I were trekking through the jungle and came across a fabulous mansion with manicured lawns ....and you asked me:
"Who built this here?"
If I replied:
"Nobody. It made itself."
Would you trust my sanity?

I don't know what to tell you. God has always been with me -- or at least the Angels representing God. They may remain silents for years on end, but eventually I get a nudge.

Knowing that God exists is simply that.....Knowing. Our relationship with him is not based on feelings. It is based on knowing the truth of his love and not questioning it. Believe me, he exists, and has shown it to you and I in more ways than we could ever count.
