Brad, atheism isn't a belief, it's a lack of belief in a god or gods.

Moral system? No, I said belief system. Can you have a religion/belief system that is free of deities?

No, Just faith

Puppy: atheism is a belief, a belief there is no God. If you don't believe there is a God you are Believing in that.

Puppy: Maturity and wisdom will come in time keep asking these questions but always be open to wisdom.

Here is one of the definitions of religion from dictionary.com: a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon by a number of persons or sects.
So I guess technically you dont need a deity in order to have a religion.

On my previous answer Ive heard atheists say "I believe there is no god" or "I believe there is no heaven or hell". So logically I inferred that in order to make those *beliefs* they would need a *belief* system.

I would say yes. How do you believe when there's nothing to believe in?

If the word you were looking for is a moral system, however the answer is no. God or no, I know how to fit into society, and I know what I feel is wrong- I don't need anyone's god to tell me.

No. Example: Buddhism, Communism, Democracy - all belief systems that have nothing to do with a supreme being.

I personally believe that you do have to have a deity (or more) to have a religion.

that would depend on how you define deity. Is a deity a personality? Or could a deity be the sum of all that is?

There are people out there that would worship a stick of wood if someone told them to. Some people actually believe in humanism where they are little gods -
I can't wait for Christs return - theres gonna be a whole lotta shaken goin on.....

Sam Harris calls atheistic communism a secular religion. He is right, but I've never heard an atheist say this.
