I'm Chinese-canadian myself, and I've read in the Chinese newspapers that said some Chinese tourists are regarded as very rude overseas. I did not agree with that personally until a few days ago, when during an outing with friends, one of my buddies told me that I was speaking too loudly. I guess that no matter how well assimilated I am in western society, I still retain most of my original cultural identity... even the bad aspects of it.

Are there any Westerners who have an opinion on the behaviour of Chinese tourists/immigrants/whatever?

I don't find them rude. Like other Asians they tend to be uneasy when abroad and moving outside their cultural context. They giggle when they are embarassed; this doesn't disturb anyone that I know of:at most we may ask why they did it. We are starting to have Chinese immigrants here in Romania and nobody complained about them as yet. Of course , we may be a more accomodating culture than others. I don't think you can say about any Asians that they are rude.
About speaking loudly: we Romanians are Latins;hence, we tend to speak loudly, laugh, sing etc. while on a train or bus. We also tend to start up conversations with complete strangers on trains, buses, waiting rooms etc. This is absolutely out of place in Germany-where I frequently travel. Of course, I as an individual, had no problem to adapt. But I was with a group of less-than-30-year-olds in Germany for the World Youth Day last year, we used commuter trains a lot and they found our group...well, quite peculiar.
If anything, it's all about cultural differences. If they are interpreted as "rudeness", I think it's wrong.

I've never heard of talking loudly to be a Chinese trait... I am ALWAYS being told I'm too loud and I'm of Irish descent.

As for Chinese tourists/immigrants... I've never witnessed them being rude at all, most Chinese (or Asians for that matter) tend to be very polite -- more so than Americans and Europeans for sure!

Hello. I am Chinese myself and i kinda wondered what you meant by "I still retain most of my original cultural identity... even the bad aspects of it." I think it is not accurate to say that all Chinese are inherently rude or that its in Chinese culture that the chinese act all gauche and unruly.

However, we have to accept the fact that certain groups of people do brand the bigger whole badly. In this case the chinese tourists overseas. Well not all chinese are like that... If you talk too loudly, it's probably because you are excited and no one has brought to your attention the volume at which you are speaking, and i doubt its because you are chinese.

I worked in the travel industry for about 4 years doing car rental and hotel front desk. I do agree that chinese tourist seem rude but I don't think they do it on purpose. Mostly I think its the communication gap due to the language barrier and their lack of ability to express themselves in a western manner. Other things that westerers might find rude is that these tourist are not accustomed to holding doors for women or saying thank you like most americans would but this is just how things are in their country.
All in all rudeness are equal in all cultures. I have met middle easterns, europeans and americans that are just as rude and they can be mean since they speak the same language as us and are not humble at all.
It depends how you want to look at it I guess. This is just my personal point of view.
