I got really really sick about 2 years ago and the doctors weren't able to figure out what was wrong with me. It was hell and I was in constant pain and discomfort. Now any time that I feel some pain my nerves get really messed up and I start to shiver and feel like I want to vomit. I've tried calming myself down by thinking positive thoughts or turning to prayer but nothing seems to help. Just recently I've notice my anxiety started to get worse and I've been panicking that I may have an anxiety attack. It's really bad and I can't control it no matter how hard I try. What are some good ways to cope with this or do you think I need medical help?

I suffer from the same. I had to go and see a doctor. You need to keep in mind that anxiety can come from 2 different origins: 1) it can be psychological, in which case the psychologist can help or 2) it can be biological, in which case you would have to see a psychiatrist. So in order to overcome anxiety you may have to do a number of this at the same time to intervene, try this:

1. See you doctor
2. Talk to your self positively while you are having the panic attack
3. Exercise 30 mins a day. If you exercise 30 mins a day your brain creates a chemical on its own that would help you overcome anxiety.
4. Breath trough your diaphragm
5. Think that as a FACT no person has died from panic attacks
6. DON"T BE AFRAID. I don't mean it in a harsh way but you need to change your mind set when your having a panic attack and if your mind is set in fear you will feel worst. therefor when you are having an attack think... I'm nos afraid, I'm not afraid.
7. Read the book Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman. It will answer all of you wquestion about emotions.

I am now on Cymbalta for depression and anxiety~ and for me it works~ thank goodness!!! I have both disorders due to health problems, that have depleted my hormonal levels in being able to handle both disorders. I had it so bad, I felt like I wanted to scream out loud and have hissey fits, I could not deal with ANYTHING! Everything either made me mad or sad or overwhelmed me to the point I just sat and cried. I was tired all the time, did not want to be around anyone, as people made life worse than it already was. Yeah the Cymbalta made life normal again. Im so grateful its out there and I can take it. I love living again! Some people dont like the meds~ but I found out my problem was an actual medical condition~ not an emotional issue, so I need the medication~ it does not ''mask'' anything for me, it gives me my life back. Remember everyone is different in their reasons for being depressed/anxious...the key is finding out why you are!!! You do need to find out what is causing your anxiety/depression~ I would start with the doctor and a compleate psyical. Explain to him/her what has been going on. Tell them you want to find out why your feeling this way before you start any treatment. If you and your primary care psyicain agree you should see a counsler then take that next step. I had so many people telling me to see a counsler, when I knew I did not need to, I knew something was wrong. (illness wise) Stick to your guns, and dont let anyone talk you into doing anything treatment wise you do not feel comfortable with. Back off on the bad foods and caffines and sugars for now, see if that helps a bit. And start keeping a journal on how your feeling day to day. it helps when trying to tell your dr/counsler info. Thats all I can think of for now... I wish you my very best, and do hope you find your answers soon!! take care!!

I am an advocate of trying different ways of calming yourself before resorting to medication, but it seems you have already tried that and have not been able to get your anxiety under control. Now it is at a point that you're so scared about anxiety (or pain) that you have anxiety over anxiety. I think you do need to get professional help. Not a family doctor, but a psychologist or psychiatrist who is specially trained in this field.

Get professional help immediately. They will encourage your other coping skills but life is just too short and the brain is just too complicated for us to think we need to do it alone without the best help available.
