At home I think they're more of a general guideline. I think eggs are OK up to a week after the date, but I won't touch the cream or sour cream or yogurt. At work I'll toss something the day before the expiration date.

expiration dates are obligatory. they are for grocery stores and health freaks. I dont keep medicine past the expiration date. milk is okay a week past expiration date. meat is something i dont mess with.
