This has been thrown about way too much lately. How exactly can a field of biological study equal a religion? There's no belief system, there's no tradition, no rituals, no deities, nothing.

If this is your opinion, please explain how this so called evolutionism is a religion.

I think what people are referring to is the way certain individuals if asked how evolution works, or if a question is asked that shows the asker does not understand or acept part of the theory, these people will not try to explain rationally in simpler terms but right away become defensive. It shows a sort of faith based, emotion driven belief.

The truth is most things in life we accept in a religious, faith based way. YOu believe in evolution, yet you've never dug up a single gibbon or tested DNA, nor do you really understand the mechanics in the theory except superficially. YOu simply trust that those who say they know, do know, and would not lie to you; because you believe in them, in their cause, and their methods. That's not different from how a Muslim knows he needs to trim his mustache, or a Jew knows he needs to salt his meat.

Anyways, it is also a religion because the Evolutionists demand a sacrifice in the form of stabbing white women. I read it in The Origin of the Species. "And we shall, in light of these isolated finches, stab white women..." (Darwin, Charles. On the Origin of the SPecies. Pocketbooks. 1995.)

Don't pretend your not just as guilty as the photsinthisists or mitosisists. You're all the same fanatics.

1) It takes faith to believe. The creation of life cannot be tested and the theories to explain it continually evolve themselves. Just because someone has a degree and calls themselves a scientist does not mean that they know everything. I can't understand people who, not having learned the science themselves, will stay say, "Scientists all agree..." They don't all agree, even if you throw out the creationists, those that are left still disagree. All they agree on is that they must find an explanation other than "God said..."

2) People believe if they can prove there is no God, then there is no authority to which they must answer. People seeking to justify themselves turn to 'science' to 'disprove' the existence of God.

You may not agree with it and I'm sure I'll get the obligatory thumbs down(s), but that's the honest answer to your question. This is why creationists call 'evolutionism' a religion.

To start off, throwing the suffix "-ism" on it makes it an ideology, not a religion. You can do the same thing to Christianity or Islam by calling them "Christianism," and "Islamism." The latter is often used by conservative commentators to pejoratively imply that Islam is not a religion, but a political ideology.

But, semantics aside, Evolution"ism" is not a religion. I see this more commonly with people referring to atheism as a religion, and while both are at best imprecise, referring to the theory of evolution as a religion is the more spurious of the two.

We all know that for practical purposes, evolution is not a religion. But, anyone can define the word "religion" broadly enough to encompass almost any ideology. One of the lexical definitions of religion is "a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith." It's that "ardor" that gets us; any set of beliefs can be held to with ardor. I think this should be considered an archaic definition, as other similar ones are, but unfortunately I've so far failed to land a job with Merriam.

So, while saying that evolutionism is a religion might be lexically correct, it is a form of ad hominem fallacy called "tu quoque", meaning "you too." The idea is to say that Evolutionists claim to be irreligious, and that evolutionists claim that the theory of evolution is accurate. But, since evolution is a religion, and evolutionists claim to be irreligious, then their claim that evolution is accurate is false.

Let's just say that evolution is a religion. It's not, but let's say. The fact that evolution is a religion does not prove that evolution is false. It only proves that evolutionists are hypocrites.

That's not even addressing the fact that some religious people believe that evolution is accurate. Since they do, the creationists' claim that evolutionists are irreligious is false, and their argument is unsound.

So, it doesn't even matter if evolution is a religion or not. Whether it is or isn't, the creationists' argument is unsound and fallacious.

Religion by definition is "demonstration of faith" and though Evolutionism doesnt claim faith in a deity, the faith is in science and the idea of evolution itself. You can easily find Atheist/Evolutionist "fundies" just by looking here. Those who throw out quotes from Dawkins and from scientists just like Christian fundies quote the Bible. There are those who walk with "blind faith" in Evolution as well... even though there is no more factual support to back it up than there is for Creation, they sware its true anyway. Religion doesnt require rituals or a personal figure to worship, it only requires faith...faith is belief in something even if it may not happen. Atheists have faith that they will die and just no longer exist, where other religious people believe in an after life. Neither know for a fact it is true, but believe it anyway.... thus "faith"

What is "evolutionism"?? I studied the process of biological evolution in some depth enroute to my degrees in biology. But I also studied photosynthesis, and no-one ever accuses me of being a "photosynthesist". I also "believe in" mitosis. Does that make me a "mitosisist"?? Pretty ridiculous. Oh by the way, I am also a born again Christian.

It isn't- but try explaining the concept of "no religion" to a religious person. They don't get it. For some reason, people think they need to be told what to believe.

Maybe its because the theory of evolution throws a big screw into most religions by stating that man wasn't created, but rather formed gradually from another species.

It is NOT a religion. It doesn't meet the definition.

As to why some people say it is, they want to have it declared a religion so that they can prevent evolution being taught in public schools, under the excuse that it's teaching religion.

It's not going to work, because there are many, many people, both non-religious and religious, who see through this heavy-handed attempt to subvert the teaching of science that contradicts their creationist religious doctrine.

Well people are told that evolution involves crazy beliefs like 'we appeared magically by random chance'. And when you think 'crazy beliefs', you automatically think 'religion'.
So to put it simply, people don't understand the theory of evolution but don't like the fact that it is inconsistent with the beliefs they learnt as children, so they pretend it's based on faith not evidence.

I find that anyone who uses the word "evolutionism" in a debate really has no idea what they're talking about, and will more than likely lie or misconstrue facts to suit their agenda.
