What type of public transportation does ATL have?

good bus system , pretty lousy rail transit. It is pretty much a plus formation--north south, east west. But it goes from the airport to downtown and is easy. No need to rent a car once you're there. check out MARTA

MARTA is the main bus/transit line, although Gwinett and Cobb (not sure on dekalb) counties have their own bus lines.

MARTA's access is limited, as you have to actually get into the city to utilize it. That kind of defeats the purpose of mass transit, doesn't it? Atlanta's infrastructure doesn't allow for a lot of expansion, and various cities have also thrown a red flag at the thought of MARTA coming into their neighborhood(s).

Atlanta is a great city, but it's NOT set up the way cities like Boston or New York are, in that one could live in those cities comfortably without owning a car. People do it in Atlanta, but I'd say it's far from comfortable.

MARTA, which sucks. It is the worst public transit system in the country and it is run by a bunch of corrupt idiots. I am from Atlanta and I do not miss MARTA.

If you're wanting to get out, Hartsfield-Jackson Int'l is Delta's superhub. You can go about anywhere. If you're staying in, MARTA is the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Something.
