I now have a dvd recorder/vcr but the recorder will not program the satellite channels, in order to record you have to be on the same channel. I want to be able to record from the satellite channels and not have to make sure the tv is set to to that channel

This is impossible since you need the satellite receiver to be tuned to the station you want to record. I'm not aware of any DVD recorders which have a built in satellite receiver. You could purchase (or lease as DirecTV does now) an additional satellite receiver just for your DVD recorder or if your on Dish network, some of their receivers have dual tuners/dual outputs and you could dedicate one of the tuners to your DVD recorder. An additional tuner will likely incur an additional monthly charge to your satellite service as well. Even if you got a DVR, you'd still have to play the program for its entirety at some time or another in order to transfer it to DVD which would monopolize the box for that period of time.

Get a DVR from your satellite company (aka DirecTV). That will allow you to record up to like 3 or more shows at a time without even being on that channel (and record in HDTV too!!). Then, play the program from your DVR and let your DVD recorder record the video feed.
