When was the surgery performed? How severe was your pre-surgical pain? Did the surgery correct the problem and stop the pain? Post-op are you able to perform "normal" tasks? Would you have the surgery again if you had the choice?

I haven't had ankle fusion, but I had to have the joints on my big toe fused. The pain is probably similar. I had the toe fused because it was extremely painful and it swelled whenever I walked any distance.

The operation to fuse the joint was suprisingly without much pain. I kept my leg elevated and used ice for the firts two days following surgery, and the pain never got severe. I was prescribed hydrocodone, and used very little of it. I was able to stand with only minor discomfort three days after surgey.

For the 1st year after fusing the joint, my foot often had a dull ache from being unable to flex my toe. This really bugged me, but it was more mental than physical. The ache went away after a year once the muscles atrophied.

My foot doesn't function the same as it did before the fusion, but the pain is gone. The fusion changed my gait which causes too much pressure on the ball of my foot, so I had to get orthotic inserts for my shoes. The fusion prevents me from running and from using my toes, but the pain I had was intolerable, so I really had no other option. I would do the same thing again, but I am a little disappointed that I lost so much function.

I had the surgery 3 weeks ago and so far I'm AMAZED by the results. I have been pain free(however I'm not walking on it yet) and haven't taken pain meds in 2 weeks. Pain pre-surgery was unbearable to the point I could only stand at a max of 5 hours without collapsing. I was having a hard time finding work and doing daily routine tasks such as cleaning and taking care of my toddler. I had the tarsal coalition resection surgery and I was planning on doing that surgery a second time, however my bones grew back from the first surgery(I have a strong bone system; lots of milk in my days). I spoke to 4 specialists about which surgery they would recommend and how they would each do the procedure individually. I ended up finding a doctor who didn't do my resection surgery and I am seriously just amazed by the results so far. My father had the same surgeries as me but since his fusion surgery he has been in absolute pain. He is getting a scope tomorrow to, hopefully, find out what is going on internally thats causing the pain. I would recommend the fusion surgery through the doctor that did mine, but I understand some people cannot travel to Wisconsin to do that. I would say see several specialists and go with your heart with which one you think will take the best care of you for this procedure. It is a difficult thing to think about because you have a choice...and that choice can be either good or bad...not blaming doctors at all, some practice differently than others.
I cant wait to start walking again in 5-7 weeks!! It feels like I've been handicap for a year, but I know I have to have restrictions when I start walking again. I will be getting specialized inserts for my shoes and will only wear sneakers until I can bear other footwear again. And hopefully I can find a job soon...it's been 8 months since I've worked and I absolutely am going crazy. But it's nice to spend time with my family and invite friends over to clean my house for me :-)

fusion = good idea(through right doctor)

I m getting this surgery on December 22, 2015. The doctor that is doing my is Dr. Conti from UPMC in Pittsburgh. He did the resection surgery on this foot on December 7 2009 and I have not had pain until April 2015. He also did my resection surgery on my left foot on May 11, 2012 which I am still without pain on that foot. He said that I will be none weight bearing for 2 months then start weight bearing with crutches after that and that is when I ll start my therapy which will be a couple months. Since I work at a Dairy Queen he suggests I take off 4-5 months of work. I can t wait until this is over because it started when I was in 5th grade and I am now I will be 21 on January 7 2016. Hopefully I won t have to get any more surgeries on my feet.

maximum suitable propose is to locate a close by shop that do expert fittings, distinctive shops these days will examine your feet and posture and %. out a boot for ya, and then make a custom made orthotic that takes the rigidity off your feet and back. the orthotics are transferrable from boot to boot and could final approximately 5-6 years. its no longer large much less costly, i've got been given burton rulers with the custom greater healthful for A$380, yet i will journey for hundreds longer than i used to and thats sensible...
