Well, to spike your hair up well, the key thing is the length of the hair. If your hair are too long, they won't stand up well enough for prolonged periods of time. Get a reasonably short cut, use a good hold gel (you've got them by the dozen in the market these days), preferrably water based. Remember, not to cut it too short; however, if it is longer than desirable, you can always cut it shorter.

Let me know if this works for you, cheers!

Gel gives you the wet, too much time spent on your hair look. I suggest a putty like garnay fructise. It gives a messier drier looking spike that chicks dig

If you want to hair to stay spiked up for a short period of time, go for a mild gel like Set-Wet. If you want to stay for a longer period go for a hard gel, like the one which has been introduced by Garnier recently: http://fructis.garnier.ca/en/product_fs.asp?product_id=22

Use hair glue, you'll find it at walgreeens or osco near the hair gel. you can use the glue on dry or wet hair. start with a small amount and spike your hair as you'd like. You could apply it to wet hair spike it and use the hair dryer on low to freeze it.
