I would suggest getting the 3.5 SE version of the Nissan Altima. The newest generation of Altimas have been out since 2002 and Nissan has worked out a lot of bugs and problems with the car. I prefer the 3.5 (V6) motor over the 2.5 (I4) motor.

I own two Altimas, a '03 3.5SE and a 02 2.5S.

I would hit up http://forums.nicoclub.com for more information.

The Altima has been one of the best cars I've ever driven, even the 90's models were good quality and had nice acceleration from the 4 cylinder engines.

IMO, the newer ones are even THAT much better, especially with the 3.5 L V6 and you can get the super-sporty SE-R version with the manual trans. for some REAL fun!

So, you really are considering a durable and dependable car with the Altima!

If you purchase the 3.5 ltr version, I can tell you that the engine in that vehicle is award winning and is currently in 11 different Nissan and Infiniti models. The 3.5 ltr is in the Maxima, Quest Mini-Van, G35, FX35 just to name a few. If you have the 2.5...it's as dependable just uses a little less gasoline. A friend of mine has a 2003 Altima and has over 230 000km on the vehicle. It all depends on how well you maintain the vehicle as well. As for my own personal experience, other than recalls...I didn't see anything drastically weird on those vehicles.

I'd give it a year for several reasons.

New model cars, particularly Nissans, will always have minor issues, recalls, and many TSB's as they are still new. In this case, I'd say 2-3 years.

However, the drivetrain is essentially the same as the older Altimas and have been out for quite some time, so it's safe to say, a one year cushion would help you out.

off the top, every car is durable and dependable, if maintence of car is kept well.

the 2002+ altima's have been great 2.5 or 3.5. nissan prob kept the same engine, just changed body.

well its nearly impossible to tell if a new model year vehicle will be dependable or worth it in the long run...but I will tell you that my 1993 Nissan truck runs very well for being 13 years old. These days as long as you change the oil and maintain the vehicle well it should do you right...unless its that odd case you get a lemon
