You might want to talk to your vet about getting a mild sedative for your cat...if you feel he really needs it. Also, a lot of people swear by a natural product called Rescue Remedy which is supposed to calm pets.

There is a product called feliway that vets can sell to you or can be purchased online. Its a synthetic version of the theramone cats give off when the side of their cheeks are rubbed. It calms them down, I used this product to introduce 2 cats and it helped a lot. Just spray some of the stuff on the bedding in the carrier and leave to settle for a few minutes. Also try putting some biscuits and toys in, if you have someone else with you get them to distract the cat by feeding biscuits or dry food. The 1st few times will probably be the worst so before you take a trip leave the carrier lying around & place treats & toys inside so they go to the carrier out of their own will, this gets the used to it, and when you get home throw some toys around & give them something like tuna or cooked white fish for tea. The theramone is a good product but if you want to get kitty used to taking trips in the car you will have to do some of the work. Once kitty has been out a few times you may not need the feliway as they will be used to treats before they leave the house & playtime when they get back. They will proably still moan when in the car but they wont be stressed & will return to being their normal selves when they get home.

Yes Bachs Rescue Remedy, available at good chemists.

It is good for humans too, I use it and it works. Also on some vets programmes I have seen it used for dogs going on car journeys, just two drops in their food or drink should be OK.

are u sure its not the cat carrier he dislikes? When my cat is in the car in his carrier, he gets extremely stressed and cries constantly. If im travelling with someone I don.t put him in the carrier, but let him go where he wants, as long as the other person stops him getting near the drivers side. He usually goes in the footwell in back seat and stays there, calm. Try it, but only if u have someone else in the car with u. Good luck

a couple of drops of valerian tincture in a little water will calm your cat, they like it too, or you could buy some lose herb and tie it in a small bag, put it in the carrier with him, the smell will calm him...

There's rare over-the-counter 'calming' (tranquilizing) drugs you can give...

...depends on how far it is,really. The best thing I've found is to just let my cats meow themselves to silence.

Two six packs and a bottle of Boone's Farm Apple usually does it for me. (I skip the Boone's Farm if I'm driving)
