Start with the financial aid office at your school. They've done the research on which companies are reputable and offer a good deal to their students.

Sallie Mae is the largest student loan lender, and on their website they offer a list of questions to ask potential lenders, to help decide which is best for you: http://www.salliemae.com/get_student_loan/apply_student_loan/application/select_lender/lender_questions.htm

Go to the FAFSA website. That is the Free Application For Federal Student Aid. This is the first step in the student loan process. The FAFSA tells you what and how much financial aid you are"entitled to". This is also a necessary step to get Federal grants which, unlike loans, do not have to be paid back.

Go to your schools financial aid office. Also, fill out a FAFSA and get as much funding from your school, grants and scholarships before you get into a loan.

FAFSA is thw way to go. But you could also talk to someone in the admissions office about other options. Pennsylvania (my state) has programs, I'm sure yours does too
