Or, if you don't have children, at what age do you think it's appropriate?

At what age would you allow your child to play with a stuffed animal without supervision?

Like many others my son had stuffed animals when he was born. But I didn't actually allow him to play with them, at all, until he was three months old. Now he is eight months old and sleeps with two stuffed animals every nights. He also loves playing with my big ones during the day.

My daughter had her first stuffed animal before she was born. However, I made sure it didn't have tags, ties, eyes that could pop out, a button nose (or anything that could come out) and that it wasn't a choking hazzard. I allowed her to play with it under my supervision when she was just a newborn. Now, she is 15 months old and she is in love with this giraff and alligator (weird combo, I know). They are her favorite....however, she can let go. She doesn't mind leaving them in her room, but I think that any age is appropriate for a stuffed animal provided the animal is appropriate for the age.

To answer your additional question about playing with stuffed animals unsupervised, I let my daughter play with hers without me hovering when she was old enough to hold stuff (not necessarily well) and explore. That was about 3 months. At about 6-7 months old, I let her sleep with a stuffed animal in her crib...which was her giraff. He has no removable parts or anything with a choking hazard so he's fine for her. I do inspect her toys regularly to make sure that they are in good condition with no rips or anything, but aside from that, she's fine with stuffed animals. I can't say that she's 100% unsupervised becaues I like to keep an eye on her, but I can say that I don't hover and worry about her with the stuffed animal. She seems to be good with them. I think that every baby is different though and some are a quicker than others and can start sooner.

I gave my daughter her first one when she was born. It's a stuffed yellow duck, very soft and cushy. We call it Mr. Quack Quack. She won't sleep without it now and she's 12 months.

At birth. Just make sure it doesn't have any parts that can come off (like button eyes).
