My Chihuahua only weighs 2lbs. I have considered having her spayed but afraid of the affects of putting her under for the surgery. Is it safe to subject her to anethesia when she is of such small size?

Many, many vets spay puppies as small as 2 lbs. 2 lbs is usually the lower limit. I'd suggest calling around to find a vet experienced in pediatric alteration surgery, as this is also the vet who will have the most experience with smaller sized dogs and cats. Your best bet might be to call the local animal shelter or resuce and ask who they use. Most puppies in the shelter are required to be altered before they can be adopted, so the shelter should be able to refer you to their vet who will inevitably have lots of experience with pediatric alteration. They might also have a low cost program with the vet they use.

If your dog was specifically bred to be that small (commonly called "teacup"), be aware that other complications may arise due to the poor breeding necessary to get such an undersized dog. Work with your vet and make sure the vet knows as much of your dog's history as possible so the vet can take all the appropriate precautions.

I'd also recommend having the pre-surgical bloodwork done to make sure all bodily functions are operating correctly.

Good luck!

I think that it would be far safer for her than having a litter. Many small dogs require C-sections to deliver their litters, and a C-section is riskier than a spay.

Your vet is not going to recommend surgery on any dog for an elective procedure like spaying if that animal is not healthy. You would have to see a vet before the procedure anyway if you choose to spay her. The best thing is to consult with your vet.

Talk with your vet about the anesthesia that will be used on your little baby. She should do just fine. There will be more problems later on it you don't have her spayed. She can get an infected uterus and then will be an emergency spay that will be big $$$.

Talk to your vet

Your dog will be ok if you get her spayed. puppies get it done all the time. make sure you know your vet gives her the correct amount of dosage, and is an experienced vet.

They usually worry more if the dog is very young. The anesthetic is given per pound. You shouldn't have any trouble.

It is much safer than what it used to be but if she is going to grow more let her. If she is full grown go ahead and do it you really don't want her to get pregnant it may killher.

IT's probably okay as long as you wait at least 6 months before having it done.

If she is old enough to be spayed, allow it.

The biggest risk is losing your best friend & money because you will still have to pay the vet and the disposal fee..
