I take StJohns Wort (a natural remedy not prescription) and it has helped a lot.

My daughter (17) took Paxil for awhile. It worked at first and then she started having suicidal thoughts and even tried cutting herself. After doing a lot of research lately, I've decided to try some natural ways to combat her depression/anxiety. Things such as taking 5-HTP, Fish Oil, B-complex . . . . . getting more exercise/activity, sunlight (or tanning bed), more water and rest. It's not a "quick fix" and it is taking more time, but I think it is working. Plus, she is changing doctors - - - - and will see one that will give her ideas on how to deal with or cope when she is having anxiety or a really down day.
Every person is different though. Some depression must be treated with drugs when nothing else works. But I'm amazed that prescription anti-depressants are taken by so many people! Fifty years ago or more, this was rare. What is happening to us???

I'm currently on Prozac after trying two others that did not work for me. I was on Paxil, but it caused me to go too far the other way (didn't give a dang about anything). Then I recently tried Lexapro, but it caused a suicide attempt. Thankfully, my Prozac works for me.
I would recommend the same as others have mentioned. Make an appointment with your doctor and discuss any and all symptoms. Be completely honest or you won't get the help you need! Good luck!

I took St John's Wort but the downside is it makes your skin very sensetive to sunlight. I am naturally dark skinned being from the the south coast UK. I had to wear factor 30 and even then could only stay in the sun for a limited time. If you don't mind the downside it is very effective.

I've been taking Fluoxitine for post traumatic stress disorder following a car accident. I came off them for a while i the summer but couldn't stop crying so am back on them now. Theres nothing wrong with needing a bit of help sometimes, if you broke your leg you'd wear a cast, its the same thing.

i have taken a lot of antidepressants. The one I am on now is Cymbalta and its a Seritonin-Norpenephrine Reuptake Inhibitor rather than just seritonin. It makes me sleepy but that is good because without it I would not be able to. It gave me a headache when I first started taking it but for right now I would have to say its doing its job and has really calmed me down.

I was previously on Celexa, but stopped due to side effects that I was unwilling to cope with. I have just started taking Efexor. So far for me, there is no change, but I know a number of people on Efexor who have had good results. However, as this is one of the 'heavier' antidepressants, and has some interesting side effects when you come off it, it's best to discuss with you doctor.

In the past I took Prozac for probably 6-7 years. It probably helped save my life, it definitely worked for me. Once I got out of the dumps I got to where I didn't need it. The only thing is that it does cause sexual side effects.
I recently took Welbutrin for a little while, but broke out in skin rashes.

Different antidepressants work on different people. Theres Celexa, Zoloft, Cymbalta, Lexapro, and countless others. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor, tell him or her the signs and symptoms that your having and be honest! They will be able to pinpoint which one works the best, and will figure out which dosage will work the best with follow up appointments monthly.

Yes, I have been on Flouxetine for the last 12 months and am just coming off them. They have worked for me, along with counselling, as I would probably not be here now if I hadn't taken them. I am coming off them slowly as my circumstances have changed for the better and I now feel more able to cope.
Natural remedies are also fine, I know people who have been better with them. I would say that if you are intend to take anything like St. John's Wort with depression, then be careful as it can react with prescribed anti-depressants.

I am on Reboxetine and Paroxetine.
It's hard to say if they work or not. I still sometimes feel depressed and even suicidal but I haven't actually tried to kill myself or selfharmed since I started on the Paroxetine.
Paroxetine is supposed to be good for social anxiety as well as depression
