how long do they last and are they worth the money?

Depends on your personality. If you are the type of person that likes to impress people and make yourself feel good by having the latest technology and products ..... then you will have to buy one.

Like all new products the price is very high initially and then the price comes down. Maybe one day all TVs will be plasma TVs.

As far as I'm concerned ... it's not worth the price to spend thousands on a TV ..... I'm happy with a 30" TV from Walmart that perhaps costs about $200.

I bought 42 inch LCD and am very happy with it.
LCD's are supposed to last longer.
Plasma's size for size are cheaper than LCD's.
There is a lot of talk about "burn in" on Plasma screens, this could be an issue, especially in the new world of HD, where bars top and bottom are common and some channels display their logo permanently.
I have read that the newer plasma's have technology to prevent "burn in" don't know which ones have it.
Also that plasma's come with the brightness set to high. By tuning that down, you can increase tha life of the set.
Sony no longer makes Plasma screens, LCD only. Maybe they know something.

Bottom line, I'm not as anti plasma as I used to be.

If price is an issue, go plasma.
If you are a wee bit worried about the reliability of the technology, go LCD.

you can expect a good quality plasma screen tv to last upwards of 60.000 hours-thats about 15 years on 4 hours a day viewing. of course a plasma cannot be treated in the same way as a CRT or LCD set there are slight burn-in issues to deal with-but nowadays most new plasma's have some degree of anti-image sticking circuitry incorperated into their models so with care this annoying problem has become almost non-existent. please pay no attention to the "they need re-gassing every few years" merchants-plasma tv's simply do not work this way-it is not possible to re-gas a plasma tv. if the tv you are looking for is below say 32" then i would opt for an LCD as plasma tv's do not do justice to themselves below this size. makes to go for are-panasonic-pioneer-lg-sony and samsung. and finally-make sure the tv has the "HD READY" logo stamped on it-this means the tv can handle high definition material from DVD players and sattellite sources etc. happy viewing.

The military has used plasma display technology for years. That shouldn't be an issue. As to price, I don't plan on buying one any time soon, that's for sure! But if you have the money, and love TV, why not?

Gotta feed the idol somehow.

With the greater modern-day plasma and liquid crystal reveal television's, the genereal rule of thumb is to take the dimensions of the television and take a seat thrice that distance back from the television. So for a 40 two" television, you may would desire to take a seat approximately at approximately 126" (10 ft 6 inches) from the reveal screen for the appropriate image. in fact, 720 and 1080 are the call. the better the call, the greater advantageous the image looks (at an better length). So in case you decide on a effective crisp looking image this is somewhat great, i could flow with the 1080p or 1080i. (there is not a lot distinction between the "p" and "i" different than for "i" being a pair of quarter step down from "p". this is unquestionably greater of ways the image is displayed than with reference to the call. maximum folk can't even visually tell the distinction the two.) i could say situation greater with the assessment ratio (bigger is greater advantageous) and the black point (you decide on an somewhat dark black for the appropriate photographs, not modern and colourful). it unquestionably relies upon on what you would be applying it for on in spite of if or to not get the 1080. for somewhat some action picture staring at and gaming hours, flow with the 1080p on the particularly smaller set (and dont ignore the hdmi cables or the 1080 will become 720!). If this is purely television you propose to apply it for, flow with the 720. for my section i'm watching with reference to the same funds (after tax) good now, yet i'm watching the 40 two" LCDs. i've got got here upon that i for my section like the photos of the pointy Aquos at 1080p, yet those are good at that funds selection (in the previous tax).

Not very environment friendly!
Have very high energy needs, which would push up your electric bill by quite a lot!
Consider alternative screens first is my advice.
Happy New Year!
