Wow. I read some of these postings and people either believe that it is a disease (which I do) and others are adamant about it being a lack of self control. I wish people had more facts so here is a lot of info from the Mayo Clinic. It's a good place to start to get facts:

it is consider a disease of the mind. The body doesn't need it but the mind needs it to cope with life. What ever the reason you end up there , there is help. Don't just try and go it alone. There is help for the person with the disease and help for the friend or family member. This not only can kill them but put them in a position that they may accidentally harm someone else. Some don't think they are alcoholic's at all. However it is only when they hit bottom and seek help , that help will work. Personal experience from what I have seen.

It is a sort of mental affliction... some drugs are habit forming or prone to addiction as also also poppy, alcohols... and some individuals are particularly prone to get addicted - due to some genetic make up - and have to be careful... or they will become compulsive drinkers... there are compulsive gamblers also...

These are however treatable by qualified doctors in all types of medical denominations - allopathic, ayurvedic, unani, etc

Don't worry if it is disease or disorder (it is not disease by disorder only but a serious one if left unattended).... you first get rid of drink company (they may not suffer from compulsive craving and can control their craving at some stage while an alcoholic - one with compulsive craving for the drink - can not)...

Because once one reaches an advanced stage, the treatment could be painful... the withdrawal symptoms could be very telling... Join the Alcoholics Anonymous - an organisation of people who were once compulsive drinkers and got out of it by developing a will plus necessary treatment ... They will motivate you to take the necessary measures pleasantly and get rid of the pathological craving that could spell doom to your health... cause heavy medical expenses... loss of peace to dear ones... Please do not dilly dally and kill the dragon of alcoholism once it is confimed..good luck.

I don't believe that it is a disease as much as it is caused by one. I think addiction is the disease. An alcoholic has the same symtoms as a compulsive gambler, a drug addict, porn addict or any other addict. I think it starts as a mental disease, but then turns into a physical disease. They lose control of themselves and can't get away from whatever they are addicted to.

I believe alcoholism is an addiction, which is considered to be a disease. I also think that if one acknowledges that they are an alcoholic and wants to stop drinking, they can do so if they seek help. AA is a good place for them to start.

I am not crritical of a person who is an alcoholic but I do believe that it is a type of disease and should be treated.. One has to look, of course, at the original CAUSE for that person's addiction and attempt to cure that first.

No i believe a disease is an illness that you CAN NOT control. Alcoholism is something that you are in control of and you CHOSE to do.

Yes. The medical establishment categorizes alcoholism as a disease so I do too.

It is possible that it becomes a disease after chemical dependency sets it but it begins as a weakness in character.

Yes it is called "Alcoholism" When you drink you can destroy your liver and that truly is a disease. My brother drinks from dusk till dawn and the doctors told him, he would need a liver transplant and even ask him if they would like to go ahead and put him on a transplant list.
