I actually only drink on occasion. Often I wont have a drop for 6 months or more, and then I may have a few drinks over a few days or weeks. I think the key is that you need to be cautious if you feel that you NEED to drink, as that is a pretty big red flag. As they say, 'wine is a wonderful servant, but a terrible master'. When I do indulge, I try to make it high quality, and I savor it in moderation.
Above all, if you are in doubt, please consider avoiding alcohol. As Gary Regan says in "The Bartender's Bible",
"Even abstainers need not miss out on the ritual of drinking. When proposing a toast, raising a glass of ginger ale has no less meaning than raising a glass of fine Champagne. Life requires ritual, and sharing a drink along with a common cause or admiration for a friend, or even touching of glass to say "Hail fellow well met" provides that ritual."
If you are concerned about what people will think, you can always opt to be the designated driver. That said, no true friend should ever have an issue with a decision to not drink, whether for the night or for life.
Whatever you decide, I wish you the very best in 2007, and always.

I have one glass of wine most nights of the week. I never drink more than one glass. If you were dependent, I guess you know you need to be very careful. I'm not sure if you had counseling for your dependency, but it usually isn't possible for someone who has had a drinking problem to drink in moderation for very long. Those genetic tendencies for dependency are basically with you for life. Usually the only thing you can do is avoid the alcohol. I wish you the best and hope that you will make the best decision about whether to try drinking again.

I used to be able to drink for Britain - a litre and a half of scotch A DAY! Suddenly I thought "What a prat!" and decided to stop. So I stopped dead - and that was about six years ago, and although I had two small glasses of mandarin liqueur LAST Christmas, I haven't even FANCIED a drink since then, and I haven't had one this year either. So it CAN be done, without any trouble at all. If you give up and then feel the need, have a soft drink or a cup of tea instead. You'll soon get used to it.

If you can control it now that is great. I as a recovering alcoholic(20 years without alcohol) cannot have even one drink because it would set off the phenomenon of craving again-very subtly at first. If you want to test yourself-have one drink and don't touch it again for two weeks. Try this more than once and then try and give up again for 6 months. If you have no desire to drink during this period then perhaps you are able to drink safely after all the experimentation. Take care and God bless you.

I have one glass of red wine every day with a couple of biscuits and 4 Brazil nuts. Over Christmas I had 3 glasses of sparkling wine but no red. A few year ago I would drink a bottle of whisky every 10 days and the odd beer and a gin and tonic. I was never dependent but I did enjoy the tastes. When I stopped and cut down on my cake and cheese intake I lost 30 pounds in 3 months.Have a happy New Year.

It really depends on the situation. If I'm at a restaurant I may have a beer or a glass fo wine. If I'm at a party I have 3-5 drinks unless it's St. Patties Day then I drink till I'm sloshed. Other than that I probably only have a couple of drinks a month at home.

lol about 10 years ago I drank every wed nite, fri nite and sat nite for about 2 years....... I was drinking about 2 six packs and a 5th and a half of vodka.... I quit before I got prego...... Didn't touch the stuff for about 3 years after that......... Now, I could take it or leave it. I dont' like liquor anymore so that is out....... Now an ice cold michelob light is great on a hot summer day........ Especially when your grilling out..... I just don't have the urge to drink heavy anymore..... (to much puking will do that to ya) If you have the willpower, you can get throught it..... Just don't get stupid with it.

Hayley my hat goes off to you and I'm applauding while typing you are doing fantastic it takes great courage to admit a problem and also give up. Don't judge others we are all different there may be times you slip off the slope and recovery takes years but stick with it and go girl no matter how hard it seems it is well worth it in the end lots of love to you and happy new year x

I used to be dependent on alcohol too. Now I don't drink at all. It's really easier that way.
