Does anyone know anything about how to find a place to stud my Chesapeake Bay and how old he needs to be? He's only 4 months and I know it's too early now... but I figured I'd start asking. I'm in the Raleigh/Wake Forest part of NC. Thanks!!

Have you tried Hoobly.com? It's a big advertising site. It works pretty well; we have our chihuahua on there and we've recieved many replies.

Heh. You're about 60 miles away from me.
Wait until at least age 2. My great dane won't even think about studding until May of this coming year.
Take a good look at your dog,too,from a buyer's perspective-not an owner's. Does he match typical Chesapeake Bay standards? Is he an exceptional dog? Is he -registered-?
If he doesn't match at least two of those,neuter your puppy. Chessies are wonderful dogs,one of the few retrievers left out there that aren't being overbred right now and I know the majority of breeders want to keep it that way.

I'd start with talking to your breeder. Good, reputable breeders have a huge network and know tons of people from showing and competing in performance events. This would be the best place to start.
In addition, I'd start attending local dog shows with your puppy and perhaps entering him in puppy matches at the local shows to see how he compares to other pups of his breed. This will give you a better idea of whether he will be a good breeding prospect or not.
You could also have him evaulated by a few local, reputable breeders. They should be able to tell you how well your pup fits the standard and whether you should even bother with trying to show him before using him as a stud.
Finally, if all this work proves that he is not a great representative of his breed and suitable for use in an established breeding program, please have him neutered. There are already too many dogs dying due to irresponsible breeding.

The best way is to show your dog. The owners of females will see him, and if he's any good they will come to you.
He also needs to be OFA'd, CERF'd and checked for PRA.
With hundreds of Champion, health-certified Chessies available at stud, no serious breeder would be interested in using an unknown pet.

Why do you want to stud your dog? Is he an excellent bird dog? Have you won awards in competitions? Superb conformation? (as judged by a professional) There are a lot of unwanted puppies in this world- please only breed if you want to, and can further the breed.
If those conditions hold true, the best place to place an advertising is with the registry itself- you will get the most female dog owners looking at it then.

before ANY dog its studded out they need to attend dog shows to prove they are an excellent example of the breed WORTHY of passing on their genetics..
at the shows you will be approached by owners of female dogs - make a business card for your dog and pass these out - you will make lots of contacts too and can ask other dog owners (perferably from other breeds) about how they stud out their dog
he will also need vet checks for things like hips...

He needs to be 2-3 years old. Any younger and he's in danger of harming himself, he needs to be fully mature. Remember at 6 months he can reproduce, he just shouldn't.
