There are new radiation machines that do not burn the skin. They are typically located in large, well-funded teaching hospitals. I have a friend who underwent radiation for prostate cancer, and he never had a single burn.
I worked with head and neck cancer patients several years ago who underwent radiation on an older machine and were burned significantly. The radiation oncologist told them how to care for the burns. Somebody will always be available to answer your questions. Modern cancer treatment uses a team approach.

I had radiation from my earlobes to my pelvic area and was burned pretty badly while the treatment was going on but it healed almost immediately after the treatment stopped.

Yes? Do they go away? Yes. My sister finished radiation therapy for her breast cancer about 6 weeks ago. Her burn is completely healed and she feels fine now. She was really tired by the end of the treatment.

I had 40 proton beam and 4 photon beamtrteatments to my head a couple of years ago without anything except the tattoo markers. I lost some hair generally but it came back curly, which was nice!
