Our older neutered dog is trying to hump our new 3 months old puppy. I understand older dog is establishing dominance over the new dog...Is there anything I can do to keep him from humping her.
The puppy chases him first and kinda buggs the older dog, we try to stop her from doing this but we can't always catch her 100% of the time. Our older dog is obedient, does not bite and he knows when I say "NO" , it means "NO" , however when I give him a stern "NO" in this situation, he can't help himself and keeps trying to hump her. Now the puppy is a puppy, so she growls, runs away and bite or scratch him in the face. And puppy knows the older dog does not bite, so she isn't really afraid of him.
I have to separate them when I am out, cuz I am afraid that he will hump her and intern she will scratch him in the eye, hurt the older dog. Is there anything I can do to stop these behaviors?
By the way, we adopted this puppy just 3 weeks ago, if that matters. Thanks in advance!

Humping is a dominance thing in the dog world. The older dog is establishing it's place over the new puppy. It will not last once the hierarchy between them is established. Dogs are pack animals and there can only be one pack leader. You need to establish a leadership role over the two of them, but they need to establish theirs on their own, and they will. The puppy wants to play but will soon get the hint, then they can play if the older one wants to.

I would say let them establish a relationship on their own terms. If the older one doesn't bite, I guess it will be safe to let them, because he can protect himself from the puppy, or he would be subordinate to the little guy, which will not happen.

He's definitely trying to establish his dominance. Even though he's been neutered, he still get those "urges." If his actions really bug you, you can try a spray bottle of water. Good luck!!

When my family babysits my back door neighbors two dogs, he does like to hump her sometimes, what we do is say NO! and pull him off her. The spray bottle also works sometimes if you squirt it on the dog when they do it. Try all of these methods. I hope one of these helps!

A squirt bottle. But you should really let it go. Let them establish their place with each other.
