I think you're talking about the programs loading up next to your time Indicator. It's easy. I'll tell you in steps.
01.Click "Start" menu
02.Select "Run"
03.In the space simply type "msconfig"
04. Press 'ok'
05. A window will appear and from that window select "Startup"
06.From there you will see a list of programms and few or all of them are 'ticked'
07.remove the ticks, if you don't want load the particular programme in start up.
08. But i reccommend not to put off the tick of your Virus guard and the sound controller.
Your problem will be solved. Thank you.

There are many ways to do this:
1. If you do not need those programs, then simply uninstall them.
2. If you do need them, then remove them from the "startup" option from Start->Programs->StartUp (Keep It Empty)
This will not uninstall those programs and you can still use them.
3. Open their properties or preferences, and then uncheck the option which allows those programs to start during boot time.
4. Type msconfig in the Start->Run (Textbox), this will open a dialog box. Click on StartUp Tab and uncheck the programs you donot want to run during booting.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

I am running XP and this is how i solve.........if there is no option in the program itself to to choose to run it when windows starts then you can go to start, run, type in msconfig, go to startup, uncheck the programs you don't want to start, hit apply, restart computer...once restarted a dialogue box will pop up letting you know something in the start up has changed, click don't show again and you are done.

Type MSCONFIG in the start menu under Run. When the config box pops up, click the tab all the way to the right. Uncheck those programs you don't want to start at start up. That's it!
