In a nut-shell, Enrolled Agents are qualified people licensed by the IRS. An Enrolled agent therefore may file tax returns (1040, 1120, 941, 940, etc.) and/or represent taxpayers, even with collection issues (here is where the money is) before the IRS. I speak from own experience for I am/was an Enrolled Agent for many years... Since I have moved on to bigger better things. Computer Tax Programs have killed part of the EA business...more and more people do their own tax returns.... And there are too many attorneys out-there competing for the same tax delinquent clients... Best of luck! PS---if you are so interested in tax matters why dont you attend College and pursue a BBA and later apply with the IRS and become an IRS Agent. That's what I did... It will take time but you can do it too. Today I am retired after a 25 yr service. Seriously.

Enrolled Agents are persons licensed by the IRS to represent taxpayers before all divisions of the IRS. They are the only individuals with a federal license to do this, although attorneys and CPAs may represent taxpayers as well.

A good description of Enrolled Agent is at the website for the National Association of Enrolled Agents, which is

This link says that Enrolled Agents have the same standards as attorneys and CPA's. Think of an Enrolled Agent as an accountant who just does taxes. CPA's do a lot more stuff like auditing so some of them no little about taxes.

Read IRS Circular 230. This will tell you who enrolled agents are and what they do. It will also tell you the standards for CPA's and Attorneys as well.

Contact the IRS. They are the ones that licenses enrolled agents, so they will know where they all are.
