Well, there are two different answers depending on whether you're an evolutionist or a creationist.

If you're a creationist then you believe that God created all animals so for the egg to be hatched there had to be a chicken to lay, nurture and hatch the egg, so the chicken came before the egg.

If you're an evolutionist then you believe that chickens evolved from an inferior species. However, for the chicken to truly be hatched into the kind of chicken that we have today, it must first have been laid by a chicken before it.

So it doesn't matter what way you look at it, the answer is the same: the chicken came before the egg.

If you believe in the Bible, the chicken came first. "And the evening and the morning were the fourth day. And God said, 'Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven'." Genesis 1:19-20. Chickens are a type of fowl, so the Christian Bible says that chickens came first.

If you have a different religion, you might have a different belief about the how the treasures of the earth came to be. In the science of evolution, both chickens and eggs came before man. Since both the birds and the eggs were on earth first, historians weren't around to record which came first.

Whichever answer you gave, it's okay. A chicken can't be born without a chicken egg and a chicken egg can't be laid without a chicken. Both chickens and eggs are important!

It is obviously the egg. The species came about through evolution via reproduction. In this process the newest generation is always one step ahead. Therefore the egg of the current chicken speces existed before the chicken itself.

I think it's the egg came first. My theory is a dinasour layed it,, and it was too small, and got deformed, so therefore was the chicken. Now, if you ask did the dinasoar or the dinasoar egg came first, i have no idea. Hope this helps!

The chicken because the egg couldn't hatch (or survive) without a mother to keep it warm/ feed it.
