Hello Everyone!

I had received my first digital camera for Christmas and now I am looking for a SD memory card.

My question is:

Do I need more than one SD card? If I get a 1 or 2GB card, will that do? Should I get a couple SD cards? What brand name should I get? Does it matter?

I have a Sumsung Digimax a7 camera!

Thanks for your answers!

For me, one card does just fine, especially if it's a 1Gb or 2Gb card. You'll fit about 1,000 pictures on a 1Gb card or 2,000 on a 2Gb card, depending on what resolution you save your pictures at. I see your camera saves 7 megapixel pictures so you'll get a bit less than that if you save at the highest resolution and have a lot of complex pictures (harder to compress, bigger files). It all depends on how many pictures do you want to keep on your camera at a time. Do you really need to have more than 2,000 pictures handy at any one time? The cards are nice because you can take them to Wal-Mart or wherever and stick them into the machine there and print the ones you want, but if you're printing more than 2,000 you're going to be spending a small fortune getting them all printed. Just copy them all to your computer, and delete the ones you don't need to keep handy.

Brand name doesn't really matter. There's differences in the speeds that they read and write, and some may have better guarantees than other as to the amount of times they can be read/written to. If you want to look into that kind of fine print and juggle that with the differences in cost, you can.

2 GB should be plenty. Even if you have the camera set at the highest picture setting, you should be able to get a couple hundred photographs before you run out. Now each camera and card is different so approx. number is hard to guess. I have a CF card and at the highest setting I got 400 pictures before I had to delete some. Having 2 cards isn't a bad idea that way if you're on vacation you don't have to stop and go through and delete photographs to make room to take more. Brand names aren't too much of an issue- at least I don't think so.

Well, if you are like a photo fanatic, you should probably splurge for the 1GB or 2GB card. These may be a little expensive at first, but now that Christmas is over, its the right time to shop. If you are planning on keeping multuple SD cards, I would probably recommend getting two 256 or 512 MB cards.

Depends on whether or not you want to have more than one. One card is enough for most people. Two make it possible to have one card for personal use, one card for backup or for work... you get the idea.
1 gig, 2 gig - both should be more than enough. Unless you are recording in RAW which will greatly reduce the number of pictures you can take.
