We have a full grown collie that we trust to leave home alone. He's been trained though, so he doesn't tear up the house or have accidents. As long as your dog is properly trained, there shouldn't be an issue.

Any size dog can be left in the house when you are gone without damaging things if you train him not to damage things.
Dogs don't come trained, so you have to put in the work to teach him not to destroy the house or use it as his bathroom. But once you do that, any dog will be fine.
In the interim, you should leave the dog in a dog-safe area - this can be a crate, a wire x-pen, or a dog-proofed room. Just make sure that there's nothing important that the dog can destroy and there's plenty of toys for him to entertain himself. I also leave the radio playing for my dog when I'm gone.

Assuming the dog is well trained? Most definately!
If you haven't yet had time to train your dog (and I really highly suggest you take that time immediately) simply buy a crate for him, large enough for him to turn around in and lie down in comfortably. You can leave a toy in there for him and so long as you aren't gone 12 hours out of the day,he should be fine. =)

It depends on the age, temperament and obedience training that the dog has had. There is no blanket answer to your question, it is too subjective.
When in doubt (and it sounds like you are), then keep the dog crated during your absence. Insure the crate is large enough for his needs and that his has access to water and if necessary, a comfort object or mastiff-appropriate chew toy.

Depends on if it's housebroke and if he's trained. You'll get out of it what you put into it!
