If the children are young you can try.. taking an object from this year 2006 that they are willing to give up or have them draw a favorite memory from this year and created a 3-d keep sake... also making a little collage of all the things they want in the new year. For example.. Title the Page New Years resolutions... if they want to play soccer have them find a picture of a soccer ball. you can also create a board game.. that requires alot of creativity.. but have them help so you can play it on new years and the process of creating it is just as fun.. kinda kills time... if the kids are older like teens it's a bit harder to find a family activity... also a cute thing is to take them to a lake on new years even and have them (or you) write on rose pedals all of the things they don't want to go into the new year... and throw them in one by one like saying good bye to the old and making room for the new... they are cheesy suggestions but honestly for new years there's not much you can do aside from make party decorations and prepare foods like cookies and such

My husbands family always went to a hotel. They were able to swim, play in the game room. My mother in law always took lots of munchies for them. The next morning they had a continental breakfast provided by the hotel. We did this when I was pregnant with my youngest for a special treat for my oldest before the baby came. Had a blast. There were soo many kids there for my son to hang out with. It was great.

Make some party favors together hats, whistles, etc. Make some snacks together and then watch the ball drop on TV for each time zone. That way if they or you fall asleep before the time the new years comes in your time zone you have already shared how many others together.

If you want to have lots of fun with them, make sugar cookies and have a frosting/decorating party with them. Make a hat for the grand prize best cookie decorated. I did this with my mom clear up into high school. We invited friends to join us. It was a tradition every year.

Depends on the age of your children. you can have a movie and popcorn pizza party. Pretend its 12am on new years and celebrate by counting down and having noise makers and party hats.

Go bowling! Most bowling alleys have a special where you can bowl together as a family and enjoy music, prizes, pizza and pop. The kids will love it. Mine do!!!
