Why do they allow children on Q&A? Like a volcano chooses when to erupt.

It waits till it can kill more people. Kidding.
The longer it waits, the more violent the eruption is. Some volcanoes are sleeping for hundreds of years, or even thousands. Others are active all the time, but they don't blow.

It waits until it breaks the rock. It's just like a steam machine: it builds pressure until the internal pressure is bigger than the external pressure up to the point of explosion or resistance. It might take 5 seconds or 10000 years.
