what is the difference between a "save the date" and a wedding invitation?

Save the dates generally go out 6 mos. to a year before hand. They aren't an actual invite. They just say "John & Betty are plannig to marry this day. Save the date". In this day and age, people plan things a year in advance. Like one of our guests at our wedding had planned a reunion of sorts the same day as our wedding. People are so busy anymore that a lot of people like the extra notice. Wedding invites go out 6-8 weeks before the wedding and people might have already planned soemthing for that day (vacation, party, business travel, ect.).

The Save the Date card is sent out well before the formal wedding invitation, usually instead of doing an engagement announcement a couple will send a save the date card if they have set a date for the reception already. The save the date is usually information, where as the wedding invitation is formal and requires an RSVP.

If you have not sent out an engagement announcement and the wedding is at least 6-12 months away, you can send out a save the date card if you have already set the date for the wedding. If your wedding is during peak wedding season, in the springtime, I would recommend sending a save the date card so taht your guests know well ahead of time and other couples in your social circle getting married around the same time can avoid a scheduling conflict. Many people find that around May/June, they have a wedding almost every weekend to attend - sometimes twice in one weekend! Also, if you have any family or friends that live out of state, I would recommend sending a save the date card so they can make the appropriate arrangements well ahead of time.

We recently received a "save the date" that was also a nice photo, kind of like those photo christmas cards, with the happy couple on it. It can also function as an engagement announcement for people who might not have known about the wedding/engagement otherwise. It was helpful because the wedding is next summer, right in the middle of vacation season, and now we know not to plan to be out of town that date, since we are looking forward to attending. I know they hadn't settled on a location or time yet, but that doesn't matter with a 'save the date' notice.

From what I've seen before, a "save the date" is sent out a long time before the actual wedding invitations. I don't know what the general rule of thumb is for when all those go out, but save the dates can go out months in advance just to let people know about it.

Save the date is kind of informal, whereas an actual invitation is more formal and inviting. Most people who are hosting special events us save the date cards. Wedding dates should actually be placed on a formal invitation.

A save the date is a head's up about the wedding. It is also typically sent with lodging info. An invitation is a formal invite sent later.

Save the date cards are usually sent 6 months (or more) prior to the date of the wedding - usually sent if the wedding is falling on a holiday weekend to prepare people for the upcoming event and for them to "mark their calendars" for it. The invitiation is sent 6 weeks prior to the wedding, and is very formal that your guests respond to in letting you know whether they will be coming. You don't have to send save the date cards.

A save-the-date card is best when you have several guests that would be coming from out of town. The save-the-date allows them to...well...save the date on their calendars and start looking for travel deals. A save-the-date isn't necessarily required. If you have mostly local guests, the invitation is the only thing you need to send. Save-the-dates are usually postcards, magnets, or other printed items that simply say "Joe and Jane are getting married. Please save the date of MM-DD-YY. Formal invitation to follow." Sometimes, you can send this with a travel information packet for your out of town guests, so they know where to stay, where the best places to eat are, and so on.

save the date card is sent out months before the wedding just to remind people(especially out of town guests) of your wedding date so they can mark it on their calendars and reserve tickets or a hotel room etc. and also so they don't scehdule other plans for that date. an invitation gives everyone the info they need and its an official announcement.
