I live close to the Canadian border and there have been rumors going around that the Canadian drinking age is going up to 21 in some parts of Canada. Is this true? If so, what are provinces that are changing the drinking age? When is this change going to occur?

I haven't heard of that being proposed in any province in Canada. If a province went from 18 to 19 like PEI did at some point, I wouldn't be suprised-but 21 is out of the question. The breweries and hospitality industry would have a fit.

I go to school in the Great Lakes region, and the day before my 19th birthday, I told one of my professors that my birthday was the following day. She said that 19- and 20-year-olds from the US go to Niagara Falls, Ontario, to take advantage of the 19-year-old drinking age in Ontario. Some other student in the class said, "Aren't they changing that?" The professor said that she grew up in a town really close to the Canada-US border, and she has heard people say things about the drinking age being raised since she was 16, and to date, the drinking age is still 19. Plus, I e-mailed LCBO (liquor control board in Ontario), asking if the drinking age is being raised, and they said that "there are currently no plans to change the drinking age in any of the provinces."

I don't know whose spreading the rumours but they're completely untrue. Legal drinking ages are defined separately by each province and territory by legislation unique to that province/territory. For instance in Nova Scotia the legal drinking age is 19 which is set by the Liquor Control Act. Changing the age to 21 would require a change in legislation which quite frankly isn't going to happen. It would be a logistical nightmare. You have to be 18 in both Alberta and Quebec, in every other province/territory the age is 19.

As in the States, each province has it's own set of rules...in Ontario the drinking age is 19

I live in Alberta and I've heard of no such thing. Our drinking age is 18, B.C's is 19 and Ontario's in 19. I'm not sure what the other provinces are.

It is an unfounded rumour.

What has been proposed by the federal Conservative party is to raise the age of consent, from 14 (12 if the partner is not more than 14) to 16 (with a 5 year "Romeo & Juliet exemption").
