Isn't it customary to send them out about 6 weeks prior for a small ceremony and up to 3 months prior for a large one? I don't know....

She should have sent the invitations out already. Most invitations are sent out at least 3-6 months in advance. If people are coming from out of state to attend the wedding, usually invitations are sent out even earlier than that - to make sure people can make the appropriate travel and hotel arrangements, etc.
She should send the invitations right now - don't delay any longer. Also she should find out the final deadline for the total # of guests for the reception hall and caterers, etc.

Save-the-date goes out anywhere from a year to 4 months before the wedding
Regular invites go out 8 weeks for out of town guests, 6 weeks for local guests.
Announcements are mailed the day of the wedding.

I would mail them out at least 3 weeks or 4 in advance to give time for people to arrange schedules to be there and gift shop. Also, they will have time to shop for clothes to wear to the wedding if need be. Travel plans must be made for out of towners too. you can't get a hotel room in a day sometimes and airfare, etc. is cheaper if booked in advance.

6 weeks at least, but depending on the size of the wedding, sometimes a month is enough notice. www.abcustom.com has a free stationery planning guide and a 30% off coupon special.

I'd send them out now. The caterers will most likely need an accurate head count 30 days prior.

You don't want to send them to early, cause people forget... or lose the information but you want to give them enough time to travel. 6 weeks is the magic number. She could send out "save the date" cards out early if she knows people will need to major traveling plans or need more notice.

No later than the last week of January. This should give people plenty of time to prepare for gifts and travel.
