I am only 20 years old and I work in a small office with just a couple of other people. Awhile ago I thought about getting my boss a christmas present, but I totally forgot about it until I was driving to work on the day of the Christmas party. Of course when I got there she had already put my gift on my desk and I just felt horrible for not giving her anything. I was ready to cry but I didn't say anything b/c I thought if I acted oblivious it would seem that I just didn't know I was supposed to get her anything, not that I didn't want to. Is there any way I can make it up to her? It is already after the holiday now but I just still feel so horrible, I can't forgive myself!

Don't feel bad about it. Your not obligated to get anyone anything for Christmas. I'm sure your boss wasn't expecting anything from you and that the gift she did give you was more of a thank you for all the work you've done this year.

The fact that you show up for work every day and do your job well is a gift in and of itself. When you do your job properly, your boss makes more money. The gift to you is her appreciation for a job well done.

Also, the worse thing you can do is give someone a gift out of perceived obligation. It would be different if you knew of something that your boss would like and you decided to give it to her because you knew it would mean something to her. But other than that, drop it. Don't worry about it.

Don't stress over it. What's done is done, but yes, you can make right. Give her something nice and thoughtful, but not ridiculously expensive. If she likes movies, maybe give her a gift card to the local movie rental place and a bag filled with microwave popcorn, candy, etc. If she likes coffee, maybe a card to Starbucks and a beautiful mug. If she's an avid reader, try an elegant bookmark. Put a little thought into it. Don't make a big deal with excuses and explanations. Simply, give it to her BEFORE New Year's and wish her a happy holiday. It's still the holiday season.

I would say your best bet is a gift for the New Years..This way it doesn't really look like you forgot, But I would make it more generic by saying Happy Holidays, instead of Merry Christmas or Happy New Years.

Send her New Year's flowers instead. Act like you were trying to do something beyond the normal Christmas gifts stuff and wanted to send NY flowers so that the holiday continued.

And don't cry about it. Seriously, there are far more important things in life.

Well she gave you a gift that does not necessarily mean she was looking back for something in return, but if you feel so bad about not giving try to get her something very lovely for her birthday when it comes well of course you will have to find out when is that day. dont burden yourself with the issue.

There is no rule that you must get a gift for your boss. Most employers give gifts with no expectation of receiving gifts in return. It is acceptable to give a sincere thank you and let it go.

You can either bring him/her one now if it will make yourself feel better. *My family hasn't exchanged gifts with my brother and his wife yet*

My supervisor at work got all of us gifts without us knowing it and we felt so bad that we didn't get her anything. But we just told her thank you and and how much we loved it.

*I'm 20 by the way and so is another co-worker*
