For wild hair full of texture, you definitely need Sumo Wax from Bumble and Bumble. It's honestly the greatest thing for short hair.

Depending on the cut, for short hair I would usually use a styling wax, or something with a similar consistancy. With wax you can make it look piecy, choppy, and fulllllll of texture!

Rub some in between your finger tips. Grab pieces of hair to put the wax near the end of the strands.

First, if your hair is straight or curly makes a difference. For straight hair, many people use Paul Mitchell. If you are a guy and want to go with hold, after shampooing and conditioning try the P.M. Straight Works. If you are a woman, they have tons of options. If you have curly hair (or just frizzy) go with Mixed Chicks Trio. Both companies have websites for info. No doubt there are tons of others, but these companies have done right by me and my family.
