I know with my cell phone, there'll be an additional charge so would I be better off getting pre-paid phone cards? I don't plan on making a lot of calls, but just in case....

i you have sprint you can call the U.S. but i would recommend having international calling on your plan. if not you can purchase "tarjetas prepagadas" pre paid phone cards, they have the phones everywhere in mexico. i dont think there is just a standard pay phone. just they are a bit cheeper and are easy to use and you can buy them at any store! have fun, arriba Mexico!

Cell phone towers are not as frequent in Mexico as in These United States. They charge extra when you use a cell phone versus a pay phone. They charge more per minute as well, if your provider has coverage(they more than likely pay the company that has the towers in Mexico to use them.) there it will probably be from those companies.
You can purchase phone cards there for when you need to call the States. This is the cheapest way. You will need to know a little of the language, cause they don't know our language. Very few signs will be in English.
Usually with the phone cards, you must enter two separate strings of numbers found on the card itself. The recording telling you where the numbers are located on the card, will be in Spanish/Mexican. Once you enter those numbers correctly, dial the country code first, then the area code then the phone number you wish to speak with.
Don't forget if you are traveling to Mexico in the new year, you will need a passport. A birth certificate will no longer do.

If you are not planning on making a lot of calls just use you cell phone...text people instead. I am from Canada, While in Mexico I text messaged my kids and family everyday it was cheaper than talking or buying a phone card.

I think verizon includes mexico and it is not so expensive as a normal international call. In fact, puerto rico is a local call on some verizon plans. if you have verizon look into changing your plan. If not, use an internation calling card.

P.S. Screw verizon for thinking mexico is part of the US!
