I am purchasing a white Pit Bull. Do white Pit Bull's need special care?

I wasn't sure if the care or regimen might be different due to the color as opposed to a darker dog. Thanks.

They can get sunburn (No Joke) so try to discourage him from laying in the sun for extended periods. Additioally, white Pits sometimes are more sensitive to allergines. There are topical meds. (Rather than pills) that work,Gentocine spray for one.Also, simple corn startch soothes irritated skin.

Yes, white Pit Bulls need special care- not because they're lighter, but because they're Pit Bulls. Pit Bulls need to have an outlet for their energy!
But assuming that you have researched online and talked to the breeder and read the breed standard, the only other thing might be in grooming, and that probably depends on what you want the dog to look like, and since it's white, you might want to keep the dog looking different from darker pit bulls.

Yes, all Pit Bulls need special care. They are very powerful and tenacious animals and can be quite a handful. Remember they were bred for taking down animals twenty times their size and for fighting. Great care must be taken to ensure that the animal does not turn aggressive and most importantly, that you (and your family members) are the alpha in the pack. In other words you must be in control at all times.
We never wanted or would never have sought to own such an animal. Yet, here we are with a 75 pound American Bull Dog. He is a big baby and would never hurt anyone. He is quite energetic and wants to play. His biggest fault is that he likes to jump up on people and we are working on that. We raised him from a newborn as his momma died giving birth. He will crawl up in your lap if your let him, all 75 pounds of him. As far as aggression goes he shies away from aggressive dogs, even those much younger and smaller than he is. That may change since he is matured now and may defend his territory, I just don't know for sure, I think he may be seeking another potential playmate, since he has never been allowed to be aggressive, he does love to play.
Pits can be great companions, in spite of their bad reputation. What caused that was the folks who did not take care to train their dogs well and make them behave.
I would advise also against those heavy spiked collars as they foster the impression of an big bad bog and stay away from the various choke collars. Remember again, they were bred for fighting, their naecks and throats are made to withstand abuse in that area. You should not need to use such a collar if you are training correctly. You are the alpha in his pack, make sure it stays that way.
AS far as any special treatment because of his skin color, all white dogs are more suseptable to sunburn, so don't leave him out too long with no shade available to him. Also sometimes white coated dogs are more prone to skin conditions, so be aware of that .

I have an all white pit bull mix. I adopted him from a shelter, and did not realize until a few months (yes months!) later that he is completely deaf. White dogs have a tendency to be deaf, it has to do with the pigment in their ears i believe. it happens frequently with boxers, dalmations, great danes, and even some white cats. a deaf dog is a challenge, but it is definitely manageable and very rewarding. if you are paying for this dog, you might want to make sure he/she has her hearing unless you are prepared to take on a deaf pup (don't rely on the people selling him to tell you, even my vet didn't mention the possibility to me the first time i brought him in!). the easiest test is a loud noise like pennies in a can when the pup isn't looking. pit bulls are a wonderful but difficult breed, i assume you have done your research on the breed before considering one. if it turns out that your pup has it's hearing the the only difference with a whitey is use sunscreen when out for long periods.

White Pits have a much more common occurance of deafness and skin conditions can also be more common.
...don't PURCHASE a pitbull there are over 10,000 homeless ones on www.petfinder.com, and hundreds more on www.pbrc.net, and thousands are being euthanized in local shelters. If you are BUYING a pitbull you are part of the problem. You support the people who are continuing the gross overpopulation of these dogs. If you care about the breed at all go to a shelter/rescue and become part of the solution. I'm sure you can find a homelss white one.

If the dog has pink skin you will want to protect him from the sun because he can not only burn but he can also develop skin cancer over time. It's not a gaurantee that he will get it but you want protect him none the less. You should always remember to do routine check-ups with a vet like you would any dog. If he is going to be outside for a lond period of time(like a long walk) put some baby safe sunscreen on his nose or any other places where the skin shows. For grooming him...there is special whitening shampoos and make sure you condition him too.

you do have to look into the families back ground ( dogs family) and see what they were breed for, and maybe ask to go see some of the brother and sisters of the dog your thinking of buying, some have been unpredictable and have done a lot of physical damage to family members, but i have a white one and the Doctor is always telling me to keep him out of the sun, their skin and their eyes are more sensitive being white
think and research the dog's family first

If you are going to be out in the sun for long periods of time sunscreen is a good idea as they have less pigment in the skin they can sunburn. This is the case for any white dog and horses with white stripes on their noses. They ofen get sunburnt.
Have your vet look at her in the future for skin cancers signs just like they do on humans.

They don't need special care. Just take care of it the way you would take care of any other dog. It might be more prone to sunburn, but darker dogs are more prone to heat stroke, so either way, if you live in a hot place, you should make sure that your dog has shade.
