My daughter will be 6 in a few weeks and still has accidents. She doesnt have them at night, just when she is awake. She did fine during potty training. About 6 months after that she started haveing accidents again and has had them ever since. I feel like I've done everything to get her to stop. What can I do to help her?

I also have a 6 year old boy that still has accidents. I have actually talken to the docotr and the doctor told me that it is nomal for them to do that up till about 10 years old. the only suggestion that i can give you is to have her change herself when she does have a accident so it incoviences her at that moment and to make sure you tell her that is this keeps happening that you will have to start taking her to the bathroom every hour like when she was potty training which mean she can go and do anything fun such as b-days,fun outings, ect.You pretty much have to scare them and let them also know that if someone find out they might think that it is gross and make fun of them. I have pinned it down to know that when it happens with my son her is usually occupied with a b-day party or doing something fun so i always make him go before and then about 1 hr later i take him again.

I think it's great that you want to help your little girl. Too often parents are so concerned by the way others might perceive them, that they don't take their children's best interest to heart. It doesn't sound as if she's intentionally doing this, and I'm not one to immediately run to the doctor about everything. If I were you I would put her back in diapers. Of course it depends how many accidents she's having, and if it is hit and miss Pampers Feel 'n Learn would probably be the best bet. The 4t-5t can easily fit 6 year olds. It's important to remember to throw stereotypes out of your head. Worries about having a 6 year old in diapers are the types of things you should ignore. It's only temporary until you can re-train her. Maybe a couple months. Diapers are made specifically for people who have trouble getting to the toilet, and are no more than disposable underwear. Some parents would certainly act as if the universe was somehow being totally altered in a horrible way. She needs the extra protection right now, and you don't need to have such big accidents to clean up. Also, do not make her feel bad about this. You should change her if she poops herself. Don't listen to some of these people, who say otherwise. Also, you are not the only one with an older child with toileting issues. I had two friends who had daughters that were over 5 before they stopped wearing diapers. I've also read on this site about a girl who broke 6 (totally normal little girl) before she stopped wearing diapers, and a boy as well. It may not be extremely common, but it does happen. This issue will pass soon I'm sure. Just enjoy your daughter, and give her the care she needs.

I teach first grade, I still get students who have accidents every year. We usually have to send them to the nurse where there will wipe up and get a pair of disposable underwear. Our school nurse has a suggestive note that she sends to the parent.
The note is as follows...

Have your child sit on the toilet at least twice a day for at least 10 minutes, preferably shortly after a meal. Make this time pleasant; do not scold or criticize the child if they are unable to have a bowel movement. Giving stickers or other small rewards, and making posters that chart your child's progress can help motivate and encourage him or her. If these methods do not help, or if your physician notices other problems, he or she may recommend laxatives, stool softeners or an enema. These products should ONLY be used with the recommendation of your child's physician. DO NOT use them without consulting your child's physician first. Until the intestine and rectum regain their muscle tone, children may still have "accidents" and soil their underwear on occasion. Pre-school children may be able to wear disposable training pants until they regain bowel control. Taking a change of underwear and/or pants to school can help minimize your child's embarrassment and improve his or her self-esteem as bowel control improves

did you stop asking her if she needed to potty as much as you used to?? maybe she relied on you asking every so ofen and still doesn't have the hang of figuring it out on her own.

i can remember i had an accident in the 1st grade when we were saying the pledge of allegiance....oh it was awful!

so, accidents happen, but how often?? is it bad enough to bring to the doctor's attention?? there could be medical issues involved.

take care.
