That screen then goes and the screen is blank. I have tried to reinstall windows but when i attempt to do so (having put in the operating cd) it just freezes. Sounds like you have a hardware problem. Could be your RAM or Hard disks most likely. Try disconecting you PC down to its bare minimum to see if you still have the same problem.

Formatting you Disk may also resolve the problems, (a nasty driver error etc). If you have data you need to backup, take the hard disk out, put it in another machine, copy the files over and put it back in yours

If it were possible to simply re-install Windows you wouldn't have posted this question. You said that you've tried it and it hasn't worked, so you have to look a bit deeper.

You're experiencing hard drive issues. Simply put, your hard drive has bad parts in it that it can't read. What you need to do is boot to the command prompt and type the following command:

chkdsk c:

This will execute a program known to the DOS community as Check Disk. What this program does is go step by step through every single layer of your hard dive and check it for errors. If it finds any it will do its best at repairing them. WARNING- THIS PROGRAM TAKES A LONG TIME TO FULLY EXECUTE!!!! So unless you have the time to sit and wait on it, or let it run without interruption I wouldn't run it. You can't stop it before it completes or else the program itself may damage sectors of your had drive that won't be able to be recovered.

Once the program completes it will throw you back to the flashing C prompt. Type the word "reboot" and then re-install Windows. This should fix the problem. If any other things occur, feel free to email me.

When you boot your pc, try to go to the bios settings. There is usually a small message in the corner somewhere as it boots which tells you which button to push to get there. Often it is F10 or the delete key. Once there change the boot order to make the cd drive boot first. Then put your disc in the cd drive.
Hopefully that will work.

sounds like the boot sector of your hard disk is corrupt.

Boot your pc into command prompt and type "CHKDSK /F" this will check your hard drive and try and fix any problems it has found, other than that the easiest way is just to format your hard drive and reinstall XP if your pc is freezing before it will load the setup screen of the cd then boot to dos prompt type "Format C:" this will clear your hard drive and then your setup cd should work

After putting the cd in, you need to restart the computer, then if your BIOS is set to boot from cd, you will get a prompt to press any key to boot from cd, the installation begins from there.

It seems you my have corrupted the boot sector of your hard disk. Get a friend to download the XP recovery disk set from Microsoft which makes a set of 6 floppy disks with utilities to boot from to repair problems such as yours.
Hope this helps, it did with mine.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
