I'm looking to stay away from being so traditional. I know everyone does "homestyle" chicken and mashed potatoes...I'm would like to steer away from that. But on the other hand I don't want to go too fancy. Any suggestion?

We did a buffet but with simple choices for everyone including children.

Jamaican Chicken with Pineapple (easy to make)
Primerib (we ordered already cooked, it was pricey, but soooo worth it!)
Mac'n'Cheese (the big noodles with real cheese, much classier than the Kraft kind)
Two different salads (one with Romaine Lettuces and Cranberries, the other regular, Iceberg, carrots, cucumber and tomatoes on the side)
Three different dressings: Oil and Vinegar, Caesar and Ranch.
We also had vegetarian dishes on the side too.

Plus there was a couple more...but I forget, I had too much champagne like the rest of the guests who probably didn't dwell about what we served.

Keep in mind that if you end up doing appetizers, it can actually lead to more than just a meal serving by the amount of food you will have to provide.

Check out: theknot.com for ideas. This is where I started. Have fun planning!!

I'm not sure what "homestyle" chicken is. We had chicken kiev at our reception. It was a little different from the standard plain chicken breasts we've had at other weddings, but so different that people won't eat it.

Remember, a lot of people don't like, or are allergic, to seafood. And a lot of people also don't eat red meat, and it's much more expensive. Chicken really is your best bet, but there are ways to add some interest to it.

I have never never never heard of home style chicken and mashed potatoes?? Is that Midwest or southern thing?? Interesting. Most people east coast do Roast Beef, A fancier chicken dish and either a pasta vegan meal or fish.
Buffet is the easiest way to go.
We are having
Asparagus and pasta in a wine sauce
Roast Beef
Chicken- haven't picked yet.
Vegetables
Bread

Weddings and receptions are not what they used to be. With that said, how about buffet style and include different varities of chicken, Italian beef and ham, a variety of salads and pasta with rolls.

Pasta is relatively cheap too, as is chicken.
I went to a wedding that had lasagna and salad and it was wonderful. Also have been to a wedding where they had carving stations of roast beef, green beans, potatos (i think) bread and some other vegetable. It was wonderful.

Go for an outside reception with a pig roast, and all the fixings. I went to a wedding like that and it was great. Nothing real fancy, and everyone was comfortable. It had a hawiaan theme. It was great!!!!!

Depends on the type wedding and the budget. You can do something as simple as BBQ, or just finger foods, or go all out grilled chicken or steak.

We chose a mid-priced Italian restaurant to do our catering. Our other ideas were sub sandwiches or maybe just a cake and punch reception.
