My cat somehow managed to break one of his back claws and its still attached but bent forward and bleeding. I'm wondering what I can do for him hopefully without having to take him to a vet. is there something I could put on it or anything? any advice would be great...thanks!

he is in no pain at all and is playing and purring and being his normal self. thanks anyways, but he does not need to see a vet. it costs way too much money just to have it looked at.

Try to clip the nail but be careful. You can use flour to help stop the bleeding and I would wrap the back foot. Also, check with your Pet Store and you can even call the Vet to ask for some tips. Hope your kitty is ok!!!

Personally I would take her to a vet right away...she might also have a broken toe or something else wrong. Just to snip off what is left of her claw wouldn't fix the problem and since she does go in her litter box, she could get an infection and your vet bill would be much more than if you took her now. She needs to have professional medical attention and have it wrapped correctly or she could lose that foot if not treated right. It might not be all that serious at THIS moment and cost practically nothing to have it looked at and treated..but it could turn into something worse and cost a small fortune to fix. Too many people don't seek medical attention for their pets when it's what is believed to be something minor and treat it themselves until it becomes worse and if they can't afford the bill wind up having to put the pet to sleep because of costs and not because it's the right thing to do. It's best to take your pet to the vet for the small stuff before they get big and have a few small affordable vet bills than one huge one that you cannot afford and then have to make a choice you don't want to make. Think of it as a small payment plan for your kitties life.

Yes, definitely. If you just leave it alone, then there is a great chance that it will get infected. What you can do is, see if the rest of the nail comes off, but be careful not to hurt the cat. Then, either put a cotton swab into the center of the nail, or you can go to the store (Petco or Petsmart work best) and but some Quik Stop Powder. It is used exactly for the purpose that you need it. Read the instructions, apply it to the nail and it will stop the bleeding immediately and prevent infection. If you can't get any Quik Stop Powder, then you can use flour. Good luck!

At the pet store they sell styptic powder for stopping bleeding if you accidentally clip a nail too short. You could clean the wound and put the powder on it to stop the bleeding, but keep an eye on it. If it's been open for a while, it may be infected and you might have to go to the vet. Any signs of swelling, redness or itchiness around that toe and I would go ahead and go to the vet. Also, it's pretty rare for them to break their own claws like that, so if that keeps happening I would ask the vet anyway as that may indicate some sort of nutritional problem.

Hold pressure onto the claw for a few minutes and the bleeding should subside. Then, try and cut the remaining bit of nail off with some nail clippers (You can buy these from pet stores). Then take him straight to the vet to rule out infection.

My dog did the samething, so I am sorry to tell you this but you have to take them to the vet. This is very painful for the animal and the nail needs to be removed. It is a very simple procedure and wont affect the way that the cat walks or anything after it is done healing.
Don't try removing it on your own, If it is hanging from a vain or small bit of tissue you can do some damge and really hurt the cat.

flour is a great clotthing agent. if that gets the bleeding to stop you can try cutting the claw off and putting flour on it again. Also call the vet and ask them what they suggest. If you really don't wanna take it in - call a vet that is not your normal one. But I do suggest calling them if not taking the cat in. Don't want any harm.

Over the years, that has happened to my cat once or twice. I learned that the best thing to do is the thing that you don't want to do. . . take him to a vet. I would make an appointment as soon as possible so that they can get that taken care of and maybe cut the claws a little shorter to reduce the risk of that happening again. Take Care!

try and clip the rest of it off with nail clippers so it doesnt get caaught on anything. Press a bit of either corn starch or flour on the wound to stop the bleeding. Keep an eye on it. If it does not heal or starts looking bad in the next few days its vet time....good luck
