Go to a hardware store. You will need to buy 8 6 foot sections of steel pipe (threaded on both ends), 4 3-way corner connectors, and 4 steel threaded bases. You can go with different size pieces if you like, but this is a standard size, and won't need any special measurements.

Steel pipe is sold with a coating on it that you will want to clean off with alcohol before you start using it.

With these parts you can create a 6' cube to place in the room that will act as a giant square curtain rod with an open space in the middle. All you need to do is lay out 4 of the pipes on the floor, start screwing in the 3-ways, and adjust the unit so that it is as perfectly square as you can get it. Then screw in the legs and the bases. Once they are all on, to just adjust them to a uniform height. Some 4" wood screws will secure it to the floor (through the carpet, which won't be seen when you move).

I've put these in 8X10 rooms before. The center is great for storing things in boxes because the clothing helps to hide them. In an 8X10 room, that leaves all the walls free for shelving, shoe racks, or whatever. You can even scoot the thing to within 10" of a corner, and square it up for more space if you have a dressing table.

If you shorten 2 sides to 4' sections of pipe, you will have enough room to create a whole dressing area in an 8x10 room, but you will lose the storage area in the center.

These units are relatively cheap to build, EXTREMELY strong and easy to install, remove, and move.

Although I've never tried it, theoretically you may even be able to cut out 1/2 of the unit and place a short anchor at the corner to separate it from the wall, making a Y instead of a cube. That would give you even more space in the room itself, and you could lengthen the pipes for hanging clothing to extent the entire length of 2 walls...

What a great idea I'm fast running out of room in my big walk in. Since it is an apartment I would get several clothes racks and then book cases or shelves (try yard sales for cost) Get clear plastic shoe boxes (.49c at Big Lots) line your book case/shelves with them. Put jewelry boxes on the top and you have a closet that can go with you if you move and no holes to patch. Also add a chair, easier to get shoes on. A mirror too. Have fun lucky gal....

This is a great idea! The only problem is that if you move you will have to
remove all the shelves etc. Keep that in mind when you are buying them.
Make sure they are easy to remove. You might want to invest in rolling racks
for your clothes since they will be easy to remove and easy to situate. Good
luck. I think you will be happy to have the extra room for storage. I wish I
could do the same thing.

Try Ikea. They have lots of closet ideas. You can also go to Walmart or Kmart and get sets for shelving for a closet.

oooh go to IKEA. They have lots of things you can use. You can put shelves around the whole room and then racks down the middle.
