Go for a visit to ones you might be interested in for him. Ask all the questions you may have. Meet the staff and teachers who would be working with him and other children. Tour the facilities. Check the rules they have. Ask some "what if's"..."What if my child has a low grade fever? Is he allowed to attend?" "What if my child is hurt on the playground?" "What if I am slightly late picking up my child after school?" Ask for references...other parents and otherwise. Ask what training their staff is required to obtain before teaching or working there.
Ask friends where they take their children. Talk to them about how well they like their child's school and why or why not.
You are wise to check all these things out. After all, it IS your child!

Visit the school and see the interaction between the children and adults. Stay for an hour or more- not just a few minutes. All work and no play DOES make Jack a dull boy. The reverse is also true. Some structure is needed. For a 3 yr. old, activities need to change every 30 minutes or so. Even longer play times are not conducive to mental stimulation. The exception would be an afternoon nap, which should last 45 minutes or so.
