I am getting a new dog sometime within the next couple of weeks. I have been looking online for a checklist of some sort of things that I will need for her. She is a pointer mix. I know that I'll need food and what-not, but I also know that there are most likely some things I haven't thought of. Can you guys help me out?

She is about two years old, so possibly not quite out of the puppy-chewing-rampage stage. =]

A crate is a must.

Chew toys no matter what the age give them ropes with the knots and a stuffed toy without the squeaker

Chew toys - I recommend this funny looking red rubbery bubbly looking ball called a Kong that you can hide food in. Anything that keeps puppy busy is time that puppy is not chewing the wrong things.
A bed - One that has a cover that can be taken off and machine washed.
Puppy shampoo - It should say "safe for puppies".
Grooming tools - dog brush etc.
Small treats for rewarding good behavior and hiding in toys.
A collar and lead - I prefer a harness especially if a collar slips off easily. (You don't want a collar to be too tight.) A harness does not bind their neck but they can't pull free when training.
Food and water bowl - It is a good idea to get one that has the bowls elevated off the floor some. Good posture while eating helps reduce bloat that occurs in a lot of breeds.

You will want to get them to a vet to have them de-wormed and immunizations if this has not been done. You should at least have a vet in mind before getting the puppy.

Going online was smart. there is a lot of good info on pointer breeds and their characteristics and needs out there. Hope you get lots of good answers. Congratulations on the new puppy!

I suggest a crate so you can start crate training the day you get her home. You'll need a leash and collar. If you don't have an enclosed yard or know a safe enclosed area where she can get excercise, then i would suggest a nice 30-50ft leash for safe romps outside. Kongs are great toys you can stuff with treats, peanut butter, canned dog food etc. they will keep her busy when you need to leave her alone, or if you just need her out of your hair. as a pointer she probably won't need much grooming, but maybe a brush, shampoo, nail clippers. treats and a treat pouch are great for training. once you get all the basics, i would say browse a petco or petsmart to get ideas of what you want for her. there are only a few necessities but there are a lot of things that will make things easier and more fun!

The first think you need to answer is how old is the dog that you are getting if its a puppy you will need a lot more then if you were getting a dog that is already full grown. The best suggestion I have for you if you are getting a puppy is to get a cloth toy or an old shirt with the puppy's mother smell on it because that will keep the puppy calmer at night and if you have a clock that makes a ticking nose put that near the puppy when you put it to sleep at night the rhythm will help the puppy sleep. Also a night light sometimes helps.

Well, waht type pf dog are you getting? If it's a puppy, you will probley want 2 get it a few toys. Puppies love 2 play. Also, it would be best, if you got a chew toy, and also, if it is not potty trained, then if i were you, I'd wanna get a puppy mat, so if he does go potty on the floor, your puppy might go on the mat. And if it's an older dog, like say, 3 or 4, you might want to get a toy, or two since the pouch might still like to play, and it might not.
Good Luck with your new friend!!!

Crate and bedding. Food and water bowls plus a good quality food (check out http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html#commercial for how to pick) and some treats. A collar with ID tag and leash. Hairbrush and nail clippers. And of course chew toys like ropes, rawhides, hooves, plastic toys and maybe stuffed toys (some dogs eat these). If not fully house trained special cleaner for accidents to remove the smell. Don't forget flea and heartworm preventative from your vet. If its cold where you live and they'll be spending a good deal of time outdoors, may need sweaters etc for warmth.

All the stuff like food and water bowls leash and collar and brushes and a crate.
Plus since she is a pointer mix I would get one or more of the dog training dummies that the hunters use and a bottle of scent to put on it. They are great for playing fetch and if the dog has hunter blood in it like pointers she should get very excited by the smell and really get into playing fetch.
I use scent on dummies with all of our Weimaraners and they just love it. My doberman even gets excited by it. I think because he sees the others get excited. He does not hunt but loves to play with the hunting dummies.
Have fun with your new dog. Pointers are great dogs. Active and lots of fun to work with.

ok...you need food first...for dry food try beneful as my dogs LOVE it. if you are going to give it wet food try pedigree or alpo. you will need to pick up bowls at your pet store. you need a tag-they have machines at petsmarts...and get a collar...you shoul be able to fit three fingers underneath. beds are optional as dogs will lay anywhere. soft squeaky toys are a must and if you want rawhides get a big bag for about 10 dollars of the white kind. You will need to take it to the vet for a check up and ask the vet about flea and heartworm preventatives. also-a brush and dog shampoo. you will also need nail clippers but dont get a dog kind because they are to be too big get a cat kind trust me it works great. oh! and you will need a leash and a choke chain because the choke chain helps train them.treats are great...dogs love liver treats!!! make sure you have a fence with no holes and if you have no other pets consider putting a dog door in. have fun and good luck!

The kindest and most responsible thing you can do for her is to take her to your vet for a complete checkup and necessary shots regardless of from whom you got her. Take along any documentation of her history of immunizations. Be prepared to take along a stole sample.
My dog came from a very loving family. However, they were negligent in vet checkups. When I took him for a complete physical, he tested positive for lymes disease which one month of daily medication cured.
Get a supply of monthly heart worm medication and topical insect repellent.
Good luck and enjoy your new friend.

i would suggest that you get her a food and water bowl, toys (plenty if she is a puppy), a leash, dog treats, a crate if you were thinking about crate training her and perhaps a dog bed...dunno what your thoughts are on training her so :) good luck!
