Because no one really likes them, but they have to put one in to show they are not discriminating against cherries.

Actually canned fruit cocktail usually has an average of 3 cherries in the mix. This was related to price, demand, availability, and the mixture with the other fruit is.

Haha! I remember fighting with my sister when we were younger over who got the cherry (or, on the rare occasion where we'd get two in one can) who got the bigger one.

You can buy Del Monte fruit cocktail now that's called "Very Cherry" and it's loaded with them (although they're not whole or even halves--they cut them into little bits) and they're packed in a cherry flavored syrup.

No reason that I can think of. I have had some with more than one cherry. I think it is the quality of the fruit cocktail that you purchase.

I don't have the answer but you're so right! It's the same with everything you like...think of a box of roses sweets, there's only ever like two strawberry ones and they are the only reason to buy them in the first place. It sucks.
