I want to know what my sign is, but can't trace my real birthdate. I was born in a country in 1974 where record keeping was not that important and my parent's didnt exactly keep a baby book. I want to know what my sign is, to find out what my astrological sign and attributes are, but I am clueless. Can I go by anything else? What have other people done in this situation? When I came to this country, my father just put a random date on my records and both he and my mom can't recall the date I was born. (The calendar also differs in this country where I was born). It's a war torn country so hospital records are long gone.

What I would do in your case is use the date your father assigned to you when you entered the country, and treat it as if you were born at the port of entry. That is, you are using the date of your rebirth, not your original birth where records are no long available. Still, the dissonance between the date of your birth and the place of your birth would remain.

Please understand that what astrology does will probably only work moderately well for you, but you may get something useful from it. Mostly what astrology does is locate your birth in space and time, and then consider what influences were dominant in the heavens at that time. But it is all in order to position you with regard to a system of traditional symbols and interpretations which is only one way to do divination, and not the best way for you, considering the facts.

You might want to take up Tarot instead. The astrological signs are also used on many Tarot decks, and they serve as a link with astrological interpretations, but the cards themselves would be the stronger set of symbols for you.

This is a hard one.
You could question your parents about the when you were born. What season was it? Surely your mother would remember this.
Was anything going on in the news at the time you were born? Was it night time or day time?
Do you have any siblings that were born before you? If so, what do they remember about when you were born? Anything they remember would help.
You really need to ask as many questions as possible to get down to at least a month.
Failing this, or even with some small info, if you found a good astrologist, they would be able to figure out, going by different things that have happened to you in your life, what your closest possible birth date would be.

I can't add any more suggestions, but your question opens up an interesting thought:

If there is indeed anything to astrology, then an astrologist should be able to calculate or discern your date of birth (or at least your astrological sign) based on your personal characteristics.

If, under carefully controlled testing, astrologists could consistantly back their way into learning a person's astrological sign, I would be willing to concede that there is something to it.

Anyone know if this has ever been done?

Were you born at home? If so then that would be hard. If you were born by a midwife or in a hospital, maybe you could contact one of them. Its hard to believe that your mom does not know the day you were born but yet knows the year. Good Luck

Maybe there's a psychic out there that can pick that info up for you. Here's your chance to find a REAL one. If the chart doesn't work, you know he's a fake.

You could go by the Chinese zodiac if you're certain your birth year is 1974.
