Chedder cheese singles with a little bit of shredded chedder cheese! Melt it in the microwave or oven at 400 for 2 min. Microwave would be 4:30.

Ehm..I've never heard or seen a cheese fondue fountain and I live in Switzerland, the land of chesse fondue. First of all, make sure it is actually for cheese fondue and not chocolate fondue, (Chocolate fondue fountains I have seen everywhere in Switzerland). My bet is that it is for chocolate...they do sell chocolate fondue, but you can still melt any kind of chocolate you would like and pop it in the fountain. Using cheese for this fountain is way risky because when the cheese hardens it is impossible to clean the tubes.
If the fountain is for cheese fondue, you have to buy the actual fondue cheese (gerber brand is the best). Add some white wine or kirsch to the pot and constantly stir until the cheese melts into a creamy consistency. Using different cheeses can harden in the stomach and cause a lot of stomach upsets...stick to the fondue cheese which minimizes this risk, but you still need to be careful...do not drink water or cold liquids with fondue UNLESS they hold alcohol to help break down the cheese for digestion (wine is fine, beer is not)...or something room temperature and carbonated (room temp coke is fine...cold coke is not).

I've never heard of a cheese fondue fountains, only chocolate fountains...
I'm a little doubtful as to whether that would really work - unless you're using processed cheese it would normally be too thick and probably stick to the machine rather than flow nicely like chocolate does.

Most cheese fondue recipes use heated white wine as a base to melt the cheese. You can substitute chicken broth for the wine. A classic fondue uses Gruyere and Swiss cheese.

I would not use vinegar as it is too acetic and might cause the cheese to curdle.

YOu can use any kind of cheese if you follow a recipe and thin it down with wine or vinigar if childern are going to be eating. Get a cook book. You can't just throw cheese into the pot and hope for the best.
